Back Pain & seeping incision

I have this pain about the size of a fist in my back in two spots. One is right about where my liver is and the other is low on the same side about six inches lower. The lower one hurts when I bend and the other hurts all the time. My incision is seeping a bit. It started in the hospital and hasn't stopped. I have a call in to my surgeon about the incision and will ask about my back when he calls back but I was wondering if anyone else has had similar problems. I mean the area that it's seeping from doesn't really hurt. I showed the doc when it started and he put a piece of gauze over it and said to 'express' the fluid out daily and that it would be fine. But shouldn't it have stopped by now???? I wouldn't need the pain meds if it weren't for the back pain. Any insight would be gratefully accepted. Gayle Queen of Yarn Balls

Gayle, Good thing you called your doctor. My only complaint since surgery is a numb and tingling feeling in my upper legs. I called my doc and he said it was because I had surgery and my body is trying to recover. I did express concerns of bloodclots but he said I was okay. Let us know what your doc tells you. Keep positive!!! Wendy Ann

Certainly there are all kinds of reasons it could hurt, including the bed rest you have had or some wandering CO2. Walking, even if unpleasant, will make it go away if it's CO2, as long as your doctor says that's okay. I did have pain like that and it was a kidney infection but I believe I remember you were checked rigorously for that pre-op. I'm so glad you're through your surgery! Gano

Gayle, I had a seroma. (found that out after I bugged everyone online until they spilled the beans for me!) It sounds like that is what yours is. As long as it is clear to yellow w/just a tiny bit of blood it's okay. If it turns colors and starts to smell, that's when there is trouble/infection. Apparently they are very common, so when I finally figured it out, I quit worrying and didn't bug the doctor. Mine just wet through everything (bandages, underwear and shirt) that one time, but I've talked to other folks who had theirs seep for weeks. As for the back pain, I can't speak to why this may have caused back pain other than some people sleep differently after surgery, and that could kink you up. I have a sore back quite often and I see a physical therapist for it. Also, as you lose weight, I have heard from other post ops (and speculated this would be the case myself) that as your body weight shifts, it can cause aches and pains in different areas because the ligaments are compensating for the shift. Hope that helps, and hope it's just ligament pain for you! Dina
