Hello Everyone, I am very new at this just found the fourm today. It looks like it will be a very helpful tool in the weeks of recovery ahead and beyond. I had my surgery on March 24. I'm a little over a week post op. I have this big old list of things that i can eat that was given to me by the Dietitian at the hospital which does have a few more things listed then the one given to me by my surgen but the problem i seem to be having is . . . . I'm never hungry, over the time i've been out of the hospital i ate one egg and one serving 1/4 cup of yogurt and the rest has been 2 oz's of water every hour and i am still always thirsty, and never hungry. The not being hungry thing doesn't bother me they said i may not want to eat much for a few weeks but i find it odd if all i am supposed to have is 2 oz's a hour and that is what i am drinking that i am always thirsty. Maybe i am drinking too fast ?? Maybe i should try drinking something other than water ?? If anyone has any idea or suggestion that may help me out i would really apreachiate it. TY TY TY TY TY

Hi Amy, Welcome to the Marchers! I think maybe you should check with your doctor on the 2 oz per hour. I can understand that the first few days maybe in the hospital, but by my 3rd day in the hospital I was up to having up to 8 oz of liquid per hour. I am supposed to be getting 64 oz of liquids per day. While we all seem to have different schedules for adding foods back to our diets, the 64 oz of liquid seems pretty standard. You need to check on that. Hugs, Mo doin' a happier happy Mo post op dance every day

Thank you for the welcome Mo and the hugs . You know i was kinda thinking the same thing because they did tell me 64 oz's of water per day and i was tryin to do the math, hehe, and no matter how you break it down at 2 oz's a hour even if i stayed up all night i wouldn't make it to 64 so i guess there is the problem. I treid to call the dr's office to check but of course today is friday, and it is almost 6 pm so i left a message and hope to get a return call maybe tomorrow. I am almost certain that i was told 2 oz's of food (liquid-puree if you wanna call that food hehe) one hour and then the next hour 2 oz's of water or something to drink and to alternate back and forth but not to eat and drink together. ugggg i thought i had this down.

Welcome to the forum. I am only 4-days out and also do not feel hungry. My nutritionist and Dr only have me on a cup of milk 3 times a day and I have to get in a total of 36oz of fluids including the milk as a minimum. They also recomend that I do not take in more than 2oz of fluids in over 15min. It sounds like you aren't getting enough fluids, and the last thing you want to do is become dehydrated. By the time you are thirsty you are already slightly dehydrated and your body is crying out for fluids. I would recomend taking in more fluids but you should probably check with your Dr or nutritionist as they all seem to have different plans. Good Luck, and welcome to the forum. Leslie

Hello Leslie, I almost missed your reply. I am now thinking that i missed something somewhere when the dietition was going over everything, i was trying to hard to remember every little bit of imformation she was giving me but hearing how everyone else is eating and drkining so much more i think i probably got something crossed. I called the dr's office and the dietition and left messages to both, im going to try to drink a little more throw 2 more oz's in every other half hour or something. just till i dont feel like this and till i can reach the surgen or the dietition to find out what i am supposed to be doing. Thank you everyone so very much...

Hey, Welcome to the Marchers, Amy! I've always been a 'thirsty' person, even pre-op. I'm having NO problems whatsoever keeping my fluids up. My all-time high post-op was 136.7 oz one day. But it wasn't intentional: my constant companion wherever I go is a bottle. I keep different flavors of Propel, Iced Botanicals, Fruit-2-0, Hansen's and Pulse in the refrigerator, and I just grab one out and keep it at my side and drink whenever/wherever I am...sips, not full pre-op gulps. And I'm puttin' DOWN the fluids, lemme tell ya... I didn't even TRY the "2 oz per hour out of a medicine cup" thing. I'd've dehydrated at that rate! I just sip off a bottle of whatever I pull out of the refrigerator, and haven't 'failed' yet. BTW, the first week or so I had NO appetite whatsoever, too. My surgeon instructed me to concentrate on keeping hydrated that first week, that the 'hunger' will come. It did, and again, I'm doing alright. When ya do start eating, just remember PROTEIN FIRST! If ya have questions, ask! We may or may not be able to help, but there's many here who've experienced many different things, and someone will always jump in. Hello Kimmer Very nice to meet you. I like your self have never had a problem keeping fluids up i could drink one of those big 32 oz's cups of ice water in like 20 minutes. I love water as long as it is ice cold. The problem i am having now is that so much information was thrown at me as i was about to leave the hospital, after reading Mo's post and everyone elses posts saying that they pretty much can drink as much as they want to, i think i may have gotten confused with what they were telling me at the hospital with the 2 oz's. I thought i was only aloud to drink 2 oz's at a time, each hour i could have 2 oz's of something be it the puree or a liquid. I have been afriad if i drink too much that i will like blow the staples out of my stomache or something and ruine all of the work the surgen did, and with as long as i waited to get this far i dont want to mess it all up. so now im just confused.. .

Kimmer too much water can be a bad thing. Dont try to over do it. There is such a thing as water poisoning. Lately it seems as if thats the new form of hazing at colleges and a few kids have died from it. Just be careful, k?

Hello Jessica I am not looking to over do it with the water, i just dont want to be feeling dehydrated all day and im a bit confused if i am supposed to only intake 2 oz's a hour, even if i cut out all food and just stuck to water, and i never slept there are only 24 hours in a day so that would mean i would never get to 64 oz's of water i would only make it to 48. So somewhere along this long strange trip, i either got the wrong information or i just got totally confused. I'm just sooo tired of being thirsty all the time

Oh, I don't drink buckets, Jessica! I just don't have a problem getting in the RDA of 64 oz. I've always been a 'drinker'...always had something in my hand, on my desk, in the cup holder of the car...I've just always had a 'good' thirst. That day I drank that much wasn't 'intentional'. It just happened that way, and I didn't realize it 'til I tallied up my totals for that day. My nutritionist saw it on my food journal and wasn't alarmed or anything of the sort. It was pretty much just about twice what RDA is. I always have a bottle of something nearby, and am always sipping on it. Back when I drank coffee, I always had a pot brewing and a cup at my desk. Just a lifestyle. Once I stopped drinking coffee, I drank nothing bu****er at work - that WAS an intentional change. That's been for the past 5+ years, and ended up working for my advantage, not realizing I'd be having WLS and would be required to have a daily minimum. Nope, not to worry. I'm well within 'normal' ranges...at least in hydration matters! Kimmer Queen of the Niners, Instigator to All Marchers, High Priestess of Giggles
