Rob Update for Friday
Hi everyone,
Kat here - sorry to put a frowny face on this message. I think I told you that Rob had all his drains removed. Well they had to put another one in, this time near his left lung. So far it is just to drain fluid and not another infection.
The big news is that they are going to do a tracheotomy so they can get that ventilator tube out of his mouth. They will put a small, 2 inch tube in his windpipe down to his lungs. He will be able to breathe through his mouth which should help him get weaned off the ventilator. Depending on how things go with the new drain, they plan on doing the surgery Monday.
Another problem is sedation drugs. Rob seems to either be totally knocked out or extremely agitated. They are trying to find the right mix of drugs to keep him calm but not totally back to sleep. They are thinking that having the ventilator tube out of his mouth may calm him down. He keeps trying to pull it out so they have to tie down his hands. Well, that would make anyone frustrated and agitated, wouldn't it?
Rob is definitely not on the easy road to recovery here, but we are confident he will pull through with all kinds of stories to tell. We have taken pictures of him with all the machinery hooked up so he can know what he's been through. That should help in telling the tall tales.
I am taking some time off of work on Monday and Tuesday for a long weekend. I am going to visit a girlfriend in Oregon, my home state, to celebrate my 45th birthday, which is May 19. So don't worry when you don't hear from me for a few days. My friend is not hooked up to the internet (can you believe it??). I will stop and see Rob on my way back on Tuesday and see how the surgery went.
Thanks again for all your support. Thanks to Angel Joy for the phone message.
Kat

Kat,
Thanks so much for the update. I wi**** were better news. Rob has been through so much, bless his heart!
Please enjoy your long weekend with your friend. You need some time away from all the drama, although I know your heart is with Rob. I also know that he wishes he could be with you personally on your birthday. Hopefully, you'll stop by on Tuesday and he'll be so much better.
I will keep all of you in my thoughts and prayers!
Have a great birthday! Have a margarita for me!!

Kat -
I would be clawing at the tubes as well...can't imagine the way that feels having a tube shoved down your throat into your lungs. Hope the surgery gives him a measure of comfort he doesn't have now.
I will keep him in my prayers and you have a good birthday. Looking forward to hearing the next update, and I pray it will have a goofy smiley face attached to it!

Thanks for the update, Kat. I hope Rob earns a smiley face next time! I wish you a great weekend and happy birthday. I hope that Rob gets some relief from his frustration. He certainly deserves a break! He is not taking the short road to recovery, but there definitely has been progress over time--try to hold that thought.
Love you
Joy
