Oh no! Why did I have to do it????

Okay folks - let me serve as a warning for this kind of behavior in the future. I did a mondo-dumb thing tonight and paid dearly for it! Well, DH's birthday was yesterday and he didn't get his pizza, so this evening we decided to do pizza. I had eaten the Pizza Hut thin crust veggie before without a problem, so I was feeling a little brave. I was dying to try the buffalo chicken pizza as I love buffalo wings, so we ordered that on a thin. Well, let me tell you - it was WONDERFUL, but it was also, true to form, quite spicy. I went slowly though because I wanted to make sure I didn't damage my pouch in the process. I kind of figured 10 weeks out was probably safe enough for me to indulge in a little spicy, but I didn't really have a frame of reference. ANYWAY, so I am noshing on this pizza and it's heating me up a little, so my lovely husband had already brought me a Diet Vanilla Pepsi, anticipating the need for a fire extinguisher. I want to say right here and now I normally do not drink with meals. I've been pretty good about that and I haven't felt the need except maybe a sip here or there when something is drying me out. But tonight I had to imbibe.....my mouth was throwing off sparks ala that Dairy Queen commercial (if any of you have ever seen it...). I decide that I may as well just accept the fact that I'm breaking the rules completely for this meal and vowed that I wouldn't do it again until it was time to stop losing weight. Well, I don't think I'll have a problem keeping that vow! Now, after dinner I wanted to take my vitamins so I would have them sitting in my pouch longer and thus maybe absorbing more of them in the process. So as always, I pop the pills and drink down about 2 oz of low-carb chocolate milk to help them go down (works great!). Now I don't realize it until about 5 minutes later, but I just created a pretty carby soupy sludge in my stomach. Although it was a thin crust pizza, it still had carbs, and what followed was probably the worst dump I have had. My heart rate was up to 112 and I felt as if I were going to be introducing ralph to john at any moment. But I was so weak, all I could do is lay there and gasp for fresh air. DH brought a bucket over in case I needed to Liz Hurley but thankfully I was able to keep from doing it. Anyway, along with the no drinking when eating vow, I hereby swear off spicy food for awhile. I now know that I won't be able to not drink when the heat hits, and these things are not worth what I just went through! Oy vey! Dina

Hi Dina: The whole experience sounds awful. I'm not as brave as you are and haven't thought about spicy hot foods yet. I did have a few small bites of my granddaughter's pizza on 2 occassions but it was fine. May I suggest that the next time you have spicy food instad of using a drink to cool off do what the Mexican do and use dairy products. That's why sour cream is always on the side or top of the spiciest dishes. I avoid simple carbs as much as possible so I have not dumped at all. Yesterday I had one small cookie - it was delicious and went down fine. Sometimes I worry about how fine everything goes down. Louise

You poor dear I feel for you Dina, Another thing you might try next time it is less carbs if you scrape the pizza off the crust and jus eat the toppings. I can only eat one slice of pizza toping and I am 3 months out. I am still only able to eat only an ounze or two of food without that full feeling. I have lost 47 pounds now but I am very faithful with the protein drinks 2 per day at 55 carbs each. I am also faithful with the water 64 fluid oz. a day and it is habit now . I am never hungry I just eat at 6:oo am proteien drink. 10 Am 20 oz. water Noon 1 oz. meat. two Pm pork skins or other protein snack two thirty PM 25 oz water five a meat and seven PM Protein drink.. Bed time I drink 20 oz. of water . I take my vitamins at 6:00 am and then at 4:00 Pm that way I have energy all day long.. This is just eaiser to stay faithfull to my pouch... Hope this will help someone and believe me Dina you have given me all these ideas yourself though your post you just don't remember some of the very bright things you have said. Sarah T

I feel for ya! I've been eating spicy foods from the get go with no problem, but have found that when I compound no nos like carbs and fluids and ingesting more than I should, it makes for an Unhappy Girl. Just for future reference, the heat in spices is from capsicum which is water soluble. When you drink things like soda or water, you spread the heat without really diminishing it. Next time you get hit with heat in your food, eat a small piece of tortilla, cracker, beans, something that will absorb the heat and not spread it. The former Mr. Happy used to drink Tabasco straight out of the bottle and follow it with a jalapeno chaser. I learned a lot about spice when I was married to that man. Connie

Sorry to hear you had such a rough time... I eat pizza but just leave the crust out... I order meat lovers with bell peppers and eat the meat and cheese.. That works for me... VAL

Oh Dina, That sounds horrible. I am so sorry that your night out ended in pain and regret. We live and learn. That is why my nutritionist calls this stage the "trial and error diet", I'm still afraid of the error part so I have not ventured much past the foods I was alowed to eat in the other stages. Leslie

Thanks y'all. It really sucked to dump, but I was able to laugh about it after. I mean - it was pretty boneheaded to do what I did. Just for fun I posted it on the main board to see what kind of responses I got. Most were humorous but I had a couple of goalies who decided they needed to lecture me into the ground. ::ugh:: Yanno, sometimes there is nothing worse than a reformed fat person. It wouldn't have bothered me so much if they didn't make such broad assumptions about who I was or what I do all the time and what emotional scars I do or do not have. I love how you say "LOW CARB chocolate milk" (which is essentially a protein shake) and they pounce all over that leave off the low-carb part and acting as if I drank a gallon. (it was 2 oz, btw.) Same for the soda....just incredible. Oh well - I knew it would happen anyway. Dina

I know what you mean about people going crazy about something you've said w/o knowing anything about you. That's why I like a more personal board where we've gotten to know a little about each other. Louise

I know exactly where you're coming from. Today I was real rushed and ate some cottage cheese around 8:30am and then didn't get to eat anything until around 1:00pm . We went into Wendys and I thought a taco salad sounded good so my mother-in-law said she'd split one with me. WRONG-I haven't really eaten any hamburg meat and it probably will be a long time before I tried it again. I Ralphed right there in Wendy's john. I normally don't have any problems with spicey food , I guess I just need to slow down when it's been a while since I've eaten . I guess we'll learn along the way. Edie f -53

Dina, I have eaten spicy foods with no problem. But if you had soda, chocolate milk, AND your vitamins with it...THAT's probably what did it. Not the fact that the pizza was spicy. Girl...be careful...you're not going through all this for nothing. Take care, Paola
