Hi everyone.. I woke up this past Sat morn with severe pain and swelling in my foot. I ended up at the ER where I was diagnosed with gout. They said the uric acid levels in my body were way too high, and this can be caused by eating foods that are very high in protien. Chicken, turkey, fish, red meat, beans ect. Has any one else had this problem, or have even heard that this could happen with our diet? They gave me meds that were capsules, which they said we be fine to open and mix w/ pudding or applesauce. Well I did that and I was soooo sick and dizzy, ended up laying on the floor till my DH came and helped me to bed. I always thought capsules were time released, maybe I am getting too much at once? I was just getting my strength back and starting to walk...now here I sit again..lol Debbie The Shy One

Oh Debbie! I'm so sorry to hear about this. I know a co-worker has bouts of gout but I don't know what the fix for it is other than a low-protein diet. Kind of flies in the face of what we are trying to do here, huh? Of course, maybe it's animal protein though. Not sure. I know he couldn't do beef at all. My uric acid levels were high also but I was hoping to avoid the gout. I wondered about it when I saw it listed there since my co-worker had gone through it. Keep us updated what happens and if they get those meds figured out! Hope you get some relief soon! Dina

I got hit with Gout about 1 month out. In fact it was on Easter weekend and I ended up in the ER. They put me on Allopurinol cause the pouch can tolerate it. Haven't had an attack since. In fact my uric acid levels are back down and so my PCP has taken me off the ALlopurniol because it can be hard on your liver and kidneys. I also got Indocine. Which is a very strong anti-inflmatory. I was able to get it in suppository form since the pouch would not tolerate such a strong anti-inflamatory. Seemed to help. Good luck!!! Clint 505/418/healthy

My DH has bouts with Gout and has for about 10 years... (he's only 31) and yes it's caused from high protein diet... his Dr. prescribed an authristis medicine (can't remember what it's called) it would help for a while, then he'd become immune to the meds... when it flares up he lays off the red meat and soda (he hasn't had wls and doesn't plan on it) the thing you need to be careful of is once you have Gout, it's easy for it to flare and the flare may not be caused by your diet... it can flare from a simple injury... ie: hubby was mowing and stepped in a hole in the yard, and was on the couch for week because of it, so be very careful now that you've been dignosed... and good luck, you have my simply...
