Don't feel like eating...

Hello everyone. I'm having a problem I never thought I'd have! I just don't want to eat. Sometimes just because its too much hassle (don't drink before or after, chew, chew, chew, eat slow, etc.). Sometimes because nothing seems to satisfy my hunger. Sometimes because after a few bites I want to . Sometimes because I'm petrified about "losing control" and gaining weight back. So, my answer? Just don't eat. I KNOW this is bad for me, I KNOW I need to eat at least 3 times a day, but I just can't find something that really hits the spot. I drink all day long - coffee in the a.m., tea in the p.m., water ****asionally). I sometimes graze (cheese, pistachios, cottage cheese), but I've not had a "balanced" meal in forever. I have had really good luck eating sushi - I love it! I ate an entire sushi roll yesterday and it satisfied me for about an hour then I was hungry again. I can't afford to eat sushi every day, but I feel like this is the only food that has agreed with me and that I enjoy. Does anyone have any suggestions for me? I'm about to go on vacation w/ my family and I know they are going to be on me about eating. I almost feel like a closet anorexic...I'd rather lie about eating (and say that I have) instead of actually eating. What's up with me??? Has anyone gone through this "phase"? Nothing sounds good, nothing tastes good, nothing satisfied. UGH! -Wendy

You and I had our surgery about the same time. I have had some problems and had to add more fiber to my diet. The nutrionist finally told me to eat what I wanted, just add one new thing at a time. Right now I am eating chinese chicken with mixed veggies and some fried rice with chicken. I am sticking to fish, chicken and turkey and seem to be doing well. I am also not eating green leafy veggies as I am afraid they would would be harder to digest. I got to the point I did not want anything fat free, would rather have nothing. So I understand. Try regular good foods and watch the amount per serving and stop before you feel full. That is what satisfied me and I am down from 274 at surgery to 216.

Wendy - my surgery was the day after yours, and I'm going through the same thing now. I go to the fridge to find dinner - and nothing is interesting or even inviting. Food doesn't interest me in the least right now. I throw something together for my daughter, and then she asks me what I'm gonna eat. I usually end up just doing a shake or sometimes one of my 2 standbys: ff refried beans w/salsa or cottage cheese. At work I just grab something and pick at it, mainly cause some of my co-workers are "watching" me to make sure I do eat. My doc has said that as long as I get one meal in a day, it's ok to replace the other two with shakes - just no grazing to make up for it. Not sure if this will help you, but I do understand. mgm

Your post is very timely. I'm finding eatin g is a real drag lately. My solution has been to drink a protein drink for breakfast - one for lunch (with an added banana) and then to eat salad and something with protein for dinner. My drinks are each about 34 grams of protein (22 from the mix and 12 from the Carb Control milk I use). This way the only time I really eat anything is at supper time and salad agrees with me very very well. (I try to add a chopped up egg on it and bacon bits). Since I've started to do this, my weight is dropping off faster again. I'm not sure if that is just coincedence or what I'm doing. Maybe you might want to consider keeping some meal replacement shakes around. Just check the sugar content on them! Lissa

Hi Wendy: I love to eat and I find that I need to eat really good tasting meals. Since I am allowed so little it really has to be good and satsifying. I don't find eating slowly and chewing well a big hassle. I only have coffee in the am then I am allowed 2 meals per day and I make them good ones. 2 or so ounces of meat, fish or poultry 1/4 c rice or couscous or pasta, and 1/2 c veggies. I make everything really tasty with a little sauce or crushed nuts and I enjoy them. In addition I have a snack at night, usually fruit. I don't try to have diet foods or low fat foods--I just eat good delicious food and not too much, nor too often. Grazing will only get you in trouble - I did it a couple of times and boy was I constantly hungry. I had sushi last week and managed 4 slices. It was good. Louise

i could have written this post!! i even told my husband today that i was beginning to feel like an anorexic! although, i don't even want to drink either. today, i've had a low carb slim fast drink for breakfast and that's it. it's 8:15 and i'm trying to force down some fluids at least. but, it all just seems like a lot of work. i hope this is just a phase. i really don't know what to do... kym

Thank you all for your posts. It's just so nice to know that I'm not alone in this phase. I really thought it was just me (because it's all about me!). I will try to supplement w/ protein shakes since I'm not eating much else (except for my once a week sushi splurge!). Again - thanks for all the support. I'm so glad I'm not in this alone and that it appears that this "phase" (for lack of a better word) is fairly normal. God bless y'all! Have a great Memorial Day Weekend. I'm off to bask in the sun in Florida! -Wendy

Well, I do have times where I find I don't eat, but I don't feel frustrated. Maybe that's because I'm able to have things I haven't allowed myself in years....like apples. I did Atkins for so long that I gave up some fruits like apples and oranges and bananas, so I am enjoying having one every day. I generally do not feel like I've had the surgery, but I do feel like sometimes I'm not interested in food. I just go with it. Eventually I get hungry! Dina
