Protein Shakes - Do Ya'll Do Them?
I was just wondering who all uses protein shakes to supplement their real food protein intake.
I know some surgeons recommend them and some say it slows the weight loss down. Has it made a difference for "you"?
I use the Nectar's Fuzzy Navel protein drink. I enjoy it the best. I would use it if I had grits for breakfast, which has minimal protein. ... or if I had something like lasagne for dinner. Not that that is what I would usually have, but those are examples of when I supplement.

You are right that some Dr.'s say drink them and some say don't. Mine has told me on Wens. that they are needed for the first six months. However, by then I should have regulated my eating good enough to get in my protein. But, if that is not accomplished then drink a shake. He is concerned because some are so high in calories. The Nectur is a good low cal drink. So to answer your question...I use them but will be trying to ween myself off of them in the next month to month and a half. Say a prayer for me.

My doctor says yes on protein shakes .. and that is a forever deal, not just for 3 or 6 or 12 months. Protein supplements are a way of life for me for the rest of my life. I am supposed to have two, most days I am lucky to get one, but I do get the 2nd one in occasionally. I think if I could be consistent about the 2nd shake, it would help my loss.
Ok heres my confusion and fear... WHY in the WORLD do bariatric surgeons NOT have the same views on this surgery? EITHER our bodies DO NOT absorb the nutrients from food to an extent or it does right? Maybe not? It makes me wonder if they really know what is happening in our bodies! I thought that since our bodies and intestines and such have been cut and bypassed that our absortive abilities are greatly hindered hence the supplements that we need to take. I thought that was an across the board DEFINITE thing for ALL people that had RNY. Like a "this is what this surgery does to you" solid deal. - for the rest of your life - thing. It always blows my mind that our surgeons differ so greatly on the diet. How much do they really know about how our bodies absorb nutrients? hmmm... Is it true that everyone absorbs differently??? Personally my surgeon told me I HAD to get in a certain amount of protein for sure based on a calculation with my weight that would give me the exact grams I should be taking in and supplements were a must because we do not absorb nutrients from regular food like we use to. Huh. It just makes me wonder whats true and whats not. Of course I do what my surgeon tells me. I Personally drink a 20oz 40 gram isopure (banana/orange/pineapple) drink a day. It doesnt taste good and I hold my nose just about and drink it
but I'm afraid not to. I am wondering am I wasting money???
Can I really get my protein from just food??? ahhh.. the things that make you go hmmmm....

Elizabeth,
You are correct, the reason most of the docs out there don't want you
to get use to them is because of the obsorbtion rate we have. With
the shakes it goes right thur you & you do not keep the protien you
think you are drinking. You get more out of food. Our docs here in
Las Vegas (which is where I had surgury) don't want us to drink them
at all. *however I do on occasion*. It doesn't mean you should not drink
them, but you should also try and get the protiem from what you are
eating thruout the day. we only eat 4 oz three times a day & no snacks
but lots of water. This i s how I have lost 95 lbs since 3/15/04. It does
get aggrivating about the docs all being different in there thinking. But
do what is best for you. Just remeber those that do drink them, you are not really getting that
much protien as it does go right thru you.
