An Ideal Goal Weight?

My doc never gave me a goal weight. I don't know why, he just never did. So, here's what I'm wondering. What's an 'ideal goal weight' for me. I'm 5'8" and weighed 320 before surgery. I have lost 126 pounds so far and weigh 194. My personal goal is 175 but I've heard that I should go WAY lower than that. Anything less than the 175 is gravy for me but I just got to wondering and thought I'd ask as most seem to have gotten an ideal from their surgeon. OH! I PUT MY HUBBYS 33" JEANS ON, AND ZIPPED THEM! WAY WAY TIGHT BUT UP AND ON!!!!!!!!!!! L&H Gayle

Gayle, There are a couple of gals in my support group that are 5'8" to 5'9"...they are now wearing a size 10 and consider themselves at goal. They are both at about 160-165. They look good (in clothes) and are both still at the pre-reconstructive surgery stage. Anyway...my 2 cents.... Va

Well, GOOD FOR YOU Gayle that you were able to get into those jeans! That's fantastic! As for a good goal weight, I know I probably set mine so low it will only cause me grave disappointment since it might be too hard to attain, but it's the weight I got to as a teen when I starved myself, and I was hoping to see it again. That is 150. Actually I got down to 147, but my goal is 150. I would be happy to see 175 though. I suspect after skin removal, it would take about 5-10 off in the process anyway. I'm 5'7". I would think with your height that you would be looking pretty good at 175, but if you wanted to go farther, you would probably look downright slender at 150 or 160. When are we getting a picture by the way??? Dina

Hi, Gayle! My surgeon didn't give me a goal weight either, but suspected that the weight loss would stop at around 134 lbs, which is around my goal weight. I always thought of myself as "big boned" but after losing most of the weight now, I find I am quite the opposite. I actually looked at the insurance height/weight/age chart and set a goal for myself. 135 was my college weight, and I'd like to get there, I'm at 143 now and I'm 5'6, but I realize I was in my twenties in college and now I'm (gulp) turning 49. I am sure that at 5'8, 175 would be great for you, depending on your bone structure. Everyone carries the weight differently, so it's really hard to say, but I think it's more personal and how you feel than anything else. At any rate, you're doing wonderful...so keep on keeping on!----Best wishes---Joan

Hi Gayle: My surgeon didn't give me a goal either but in Oct. I asked him what I should weigh and he said 140 -155 would be fine for my height of 5'7". I now weigh 131 and I never thought I could weigh so little. According to the bmi calculator I could be at the bottom end of normal weight at 120 - not that I am going there. So you might want to check with that or on fitday.com for an ideal weight goal. Congrats on your weight loss so far. Louise

Gayle, I am 5' 8.5" and when my surgeon and I first spoke about an ideal weight he said 170 - 175. Well last week when I saw him for follow up for another surgery he did recently on me he said he felt I would be able to healthily (is that a word) maintain around 150 - 155. I wasnt sure whether to choke him or hug him, he said my body definately showed its willingness to shed the pounds and that he felt the 150's range was reasonable and doable. I started out at 334 and am now 179, I cant beleive I have lost almost 1/2 of me. WOW how unreal. I like you feel anything below 175 is icing on the cake!!! (Good thing I dump and cant eat cake or the icing, huh?) Best wishes, Janelle

HI GAYLE, I'M 5'8 AND STARTED AT 254.5, AFTER THE SURGERY MY DOCTOR SAID THAT 150 WOULD BE A GOOD WEIGHT FOR ME BUT THAT I SHOULD NEVER GO BELOW 119(YEAH RIGHT LIKE THAT WILL EVER HAPPEN!!). I AM NOW 10 MONTHS OUT AND I WEIGH 140, WHICH APPARENTLY IS LESS THAN THE DR. FEELS COMFORTABLE WITH SINCE HE HAS SCHEDULED ME TO COME IN FOR A VISIT TO "RE-VAMP" MY DIET AND SET UP AN APPT. WITH A DIETICIAN. I DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY CAN DO SINCE I ALREADY AM ABLE TO EAT ANYTHING I WANT EXCEPT FOR GROUND BEEF AND BREAD. I THINK A PERSONS GOAL WEIGHT SHOULD BE BASED ON THE INDIVIDUAL PERSON AND THEIR FRAME...GET TO WHERE YOU'RE HAPPY AND COMFORTABLE WITH YOURSELF AND MAKE THAT YOUR GOAL...PERSONALLY I WOULD LIKE TO WEIGH 135 BUT I HAVEN'T LOST ANY WEIGHT IN ABOUT A MONTH SO I GUESS MY BODY HAS DECIDED FOR ME AND THATS OK, I GUESS. GOOD LUCK WITH WHATEVER GOAL YOU DECIDE. LAURIE
