Welcome home Theresa!  Sorry - I know you've been home for a bit, but I haven't been on lately.  Glad to hear that you are doing so amazingly well - but you have the perfect mindset so of course you are!!!  My surgery is about 2 1/2 weeks away.  Can't wait!  Cheers~Sandi~

I hear taking your own pillow with you helps two ways - you sleep more comfortably and you can hold it over your tummy on the drive home (so the seat belt won't irritate your incisions). Just a thought!  ~Sandi ~

honey... OMG didn't they suggest you CRUSH your pills and dilute them into a liquid??  It tastes simply AWFUL, but it is so much more tolerable than trying to swallow jagged hunks.  I bought a simple pill crusher at wal-mart and it works wonders.   My surgeon won't let me swallow any sized pills for 2 months!

I ended up going back to the hospital less than 24 hrs after my homecoming.  I had severe swelling that kept ANYTHNG - even water - from getting past my pouch!  I had to stay an additional 3 days to get through that ordeal and it was NO fun!!

Anyway, its been 3 days since returning and I'm feeling so good now.  The soreness is getting less and less and I am able to tolerate more and more varieties of liquids into my diet.  I hope by the time I read an update from you tomorrow that you are feeling much better too.

My thoughts are with you!!! GET BETTER SOON!!   ~Jules

Topic: Liquid-Safe "Chili" recipe - check it out!!
I love southwest cuisine and I've been soooo bored with chicken broth, protein drinks, and diluted juice.  I needed MORE!!  According to my surgeon's post-op handbook, I can puree some items as long as I thin them A LOT and STRAIN THEM before consuming.  Here's what I came up with:

MOCK CHILI - liquid style
1/2 C black beans (with some juices from can)
1/2 C tomato & red pepper soup (plain tomato will do)
1/2 C home made chicken stock (canned will be OK if that's all u have)
chili powder, cumin powder, onion powder, salt
Garnish:  dollop of sour cream or sqeeze of lime (or both!)

Add all ingredients to small counter-top blender or food processor.  The powders and salt are to your personal taste... a few dashes of each will do to start with.  Blend for 45-60 seconds til creamy smooth.  Taste small amt to see if you need any more seasoning.  Once finished, run mixture through fine mesh strainer to remove bean skins.   Makes 2 servings (approx. 1/2 C each).  Place one serving in your favorite mug and heat in microwave for 1 minute.  If it has been chilled in fridge, it may need additional time.  After heating, add small dollop of sour cream or squeeze of lime and mix in for taste.  ENJOY!

Topic: RE: what other liquids can we drink other than soup and water?
I'm assuming you had a gastric bypass?  Not sure, but I think its really up to your surgeon.  Did you call?  I know they'd be happy to answer that question.

My own personal experience is that Yes, I am able to have milk in my first week.  I think you can have DECAF coffee - the caffeine dehydrates you, so maybe try that as an alternative.  I am also allowed to have splenda.  In fact I was given it to flavor my tea in the hospital.

Hope that helps a little.  I am posting a new 'liquid' recipe after posting this comment... check it out on this same board.

Topic: RE: HOME from sept 4th surgery - feeling icky
UPDATE:

a few hours after I posted on Sunday, I had to be rushed back to Cleveland (1 hr drive).  I was in severe pain and had become very dehydrated.

The re-admitted me and I spent another 3 days in there.  Didn't return home til Wednesday.  Apparently my new pouch and connecting intestines swelled beyond normal and were causing the intense pain and nausea.  It was so bad that my old stomach wasn't draining either and began to fill with more and more fluid each day.  It took til Tues night on regular doses of anti-inflammatories to get the swelling down to an acceptable place & my old stomach drained.  By Wed. morning I was feeling OK enough to come home and things have gotten much better.

Thanks for all your posts and comments.  :)

Hi Leslie. Good luck back at ya!!! I'm scheduled for almost the exact same time - 12:10! I'm not having lap band, though. I'm having an open procedure - gastric bypass. I am very worried about the surgery. I'm very focused though...it's not about the thin part for me. I have medical issues that are getting worse and I want to be here for my kids. So I researched and prepped for 3 years. I am as ready as I can be. I'd still love to hear how you are doing even if our approach is different...we are on the same road!!!!!!!! You'll be in my thoughts on Monday. I'm actually pulling out my stuff to pack now. See you on the other side!!!!!!!!!
