Hi, Steve!  Don't feel bad for venting, we are all on the same journey and venting is what keeps us sane (sorta lol).  I too had some very strong emotions/depression, etc right after surgery.  My hormones went bonkers for a couple weeks and I was all over the place.  The way my Docs explained it to me is that hormones (Estrogen namely, and yes, guys have a little of that too) are fat soluble hormones (or stored in fat) so as you lose fat, your system is flooded with hormones.  (I couldn't wait to share that one with DH lol).  One question though, were you on any kind of anti-depressant meds pre-op, even if you were taking them for an off-label use (i.e. Wellbutrin to quit smoking or Cymbalta to help with chronic pain)? That's the only other thing that came to mind, if you were on them pre-op it would be normal post-op to have a bit of the blues as your body works the chemicals out of your system.  I hope my semi-explanation is somewhat helpful.  Best of luck with your recovery!    Jen

Topic: Help! I am really afraid
I wanted to get insurance approval so badly and now that I have it and have a surgery date, I am full of fear.  I'm afraid of losing lots of hair and I'm afraid of being sick afterward but most of all I'm afraid of looking old (I'm 51) once I lose the weight.  Did any one in my age range feel that your face drooped and looked older after losing the weight?

I know I'm sounding whinny, but I think the reality of this is starting to sink in.

Topic: Depression Concern
Hi gang, it's me again with another question...and being that their are mostly women here (I am not at all trying to be sexist) I am not sure if this will make sense to any of you.   Doing okay in terms of recovery as its been 1 week post op now.....just glad to be home

I am not one who has EVER had ANY depression issues nor one to get emotional under even the most upsetting of situations. All you need to do is look at my profile on here and you would know that I am just not one to get upset much or depressed.

That being said something happened the otherday that got me so upset I couldn't (sorry to sound corny for those men here) but I couldn't hold some tears back and feel a bit depressed.

My little girl who is 2 and a half now came over to give me a hug and tell me she loves me... She then asked for me to pick her up and give her a hug. I told her I couldn't and she got so upset....that's when I just got emotional for a couple minutes that I couldn't hold my own little girl... It triggered all sort of what I can only describe now as depressing thoughts like what did I do to myself etc...

I'm sorry to air this out on the cyber waves, but perhaps maybe I just needed to vent this somewhere and maybe that's the therapy I need.

Reason I was so suprised by this emotional flood, if you will, is that it's not like me to do something like that...

Okay sorry for rambling about all this...

Steve

Topic: RE: I need information!
I had my vsg on September 11th.  For 2 weeks prior to surgery I was on a high protein liquid diet I had to get the supplements from the dr.  1 week prior to surgery I had a weigh in to make sure I was sticking to the diet and have a pre-op physical with blood work.  The surgery went well.  I was up and walking about 6 hours after I came out of recovery.  I did have some pain but it was not alot.  I had ice packs on my belly more to help with pain control than swelling the nurse said.  I could have ice chips but nothing to drin****il after the leak test the next morning.  You have to sip contrast while they watch it go down to see if there are any leaks.  After that I was given unjury protein drink and I had to finish an ounce an hour.  Some times I made it and sometimes not.  Expect to walk walk walk.  It helps with the gas.  I came home the second day after surgery.  I have more pain in my back than in my stomach but that is from sleeping at a 45 degree angle which put me mostly on my tail bone and I have arthritis in my back.  I am on a liquid diet for 2 weeks post-op.  I think then I go to mushies.  (had to buy all of the liquid diet stuff from the dr. but that is ok then I know I am getting the right stuff.)
Hope this helps.  The hospital staff was great!

Topic: RE: Surgery scheduled for Sept 29, 2008. Nervous, but excited
Thank you...the more info i can get, the better!  I think a lot of my nervousness comes from not feeling like I know enough about the nutrition and vitamins.  Wishing you luck as well.  You sound like you are ready to go!!!
