Hi, I have a bit of an update. I discussed thoroughly what treatment options I had with Dr. Birch and I am going to have the RNYGB on Jan 29/14. I have done lots of research on this and I feel pretty confident now that it will improve my situation. I am still waiting to see what my c-peptide comes back as, to know if it's possible that I can ever get off insulin. I just want to feel healthy and have energy to do the things I dream of doing before I leave this world. I am praying that this will give me a renewed chance at life, even if I have to still deal with meds and diet/exercise protocols. I am hoping to drop to 135 lbs, which would be about a loss of 30 lbs that I need to do.
I will post again once my surgery is done.
Thanks for your help.
Hi all,
I am in the process of firming up a date to travel to Mexico to have vsg surgery done and was wondering what those of you who also travelled abroad used for peace of mind for any sort of emergency's? Also, for any of you who have had complications afterwards back at home, does AB healthcare cover you?
Thanks so much!
I would try calling the Bariatric clinic , I know there was a group of people who used to meet, but I haven't heard anything in a while about it.....
Hi just moved back to the Hat - 10 months since surgery looking for a support group here. Anyone? Anything?
I agree completely with Mike. I used the time before my surgery to get into the best shape that I could physically get myself into so that I would be as healthy as I physically could be before surgery.
I joined a bootcamp class and worked out every evening. I watched what I ate so I never gained any weight because I was terrified of gaining weight and I generally enjoyed life.
I also met with other bariatric people at the Edmonton Bariatric Support Group who helped me to realize that this is actually what I wanted to do. It is really nice to meet people with the same goals and problems that you are having.
I used the time productively. Attended the Weight Wise modules and practiced what they preached.
Become more active - go to the gym, pool, hockey rink ...whatever. Track your foods, moods, eating habits and wins and losses. Set some intermediate goals. Meet with other bariatric folk and build a support network.
Work towards becoming more fit, knowledgeable about nutrition, your eating habits and what influences them and become more informed about bariatric surgery.
Get prepared for post surgery...
All together - lots to occupy any bariatric patient's time!
...and post here from time to time.

How did you cope? It just seems that this process is taking forever. I was referred to the Edmonton clinic in January of 2013 and now that it is January of 2014, I still have an 8 month wait.
Some days it just seems it's taking forever - I can make a baby in less time.
What did you do to make the waiting more bearable?

I had my surgery in Mexico and have not participated in the Alberta system, so not sure what, if anything, is available in Calgary. I've tried to bring people together for coffee a couple of times but was not successful. I'd be happy to meet you for coffee :). Please PM me whenever you like.
