Topic: RE: How to decide Banding vs. Bypass? (long)

From what I read and heard from the nurses the band scares me and is not considered a long term solution.  The nurses at the Red Deer clinic had some statistics on the different surgeries (don't ask me to quote them :D )  but the sleeve had the least complications and the band the most.  Not sure what area you are in but the wait time in Red Deer is about a year+-.  Might be worth it if you'd like to save your money for a new fabulous wardrobe kiss

Good luck with your research...I spent about 6 months researching before I took the first step.  Being informed really makes it easier!

Topic: RE: Red Deer Clinic - Fall/Winter - Any dates set????

Thank you everyone for your replies.  I know I can't give up but the bumps in the road are high at times!

I had an appointment with the nurse yesterday and she was very understanding and says that most people go through this.  She completely understood how hard it is to wait and said I'm doing fine.  We talked about food and she didn't mind my choices so much so I just have to work on portion control.  Not gaining weight has helped.

My plans are to write out a weekly diet, go back to counting calories (I was most successful with that) and give my self a break with the stress!

She told me there is 3 or 4 of us up for surgery right now and as soon as they get the dates I will be one to receive one.  It's out of their control which makes it hard for them to give answers but at least now I know that it's on a first come first serve basis.  Somehow I thought it was based more on need.  And seeing that several times I've gone into the clinic I had someone (another client) giving me attitude and telling me I'm too small to need surgery I thought I'd be passed over. lol I never thought I'd be looked down on by other people for being too small :p  I look forward to it happening more!

Scribbles are you also out of Red Deer?

Thanks again, I don't come to the board every day but it helps to know you guys are here when I need help!

Hi Melanie

Just had an appointment earlier today and I have a bit of a tip for you.  You will be encouraged to begin making lifestyle changes when you begin to take the modules.  There is a plethora of information as well as tips offered along the way.  If you decide the timing is right for you and you are going to go at it, make sure you have weighed yourself at one of the health units or somewhere similar. ie. using a reliable medical scale

You will be asked your starting weight at your first Weight Wise appointment which is what will be used for the BMI calculation.  I just happened to have done this or could have potentially been denied because of a low BMI.  As it is, I have lost nearly ninety-five pounds since beginning the modules in May, 2012 with about twenty to thirty pounds to go.

I am very aware that I will not lose a ton more weight with WLS but am determined to keep off what I've lost.  This has become my main reason for continuing to pursue this procedure.  As it turns out, this may end up being the most difficult part of the journey for me--time will tell.  Rest assured, though, that you cannot lose too much weight pre-op if you have been recorded with an eligible BMI (I specifically asked this question today.)

I hope this will be encouraging information for you.

Hi MissHomeJames,

I am so happy for you, that is an incredible amount of weight to lose all on your own! I completely identify with what you are saying about using the procedure as a tool to maintain. As a person who has lost and gained several hundred pounds (thank you dr.atkins), the idea of having that extra edge to help with maintainence would be like adding the missing piece of the puzzle.

I wish you every success and thank you so much for sharing!!

You betcha! I'm available Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. We'll have our grandbaby all of next weekend, so I have tonnes of cleaning to do, but breaks are good for the mental health, yes?

I asked the surgeon at Edmonton Weight wise once and he said he would never do it, didn't agree with it......... yes it had great weight loss results but also had alot more complications, and major malabsorption issues....much more than the RNY
