There should be no fees for the panni removal. They are covered by AHS.
Dr. Jonathan Toy in Edmonton is a specialist in reconstructive surgery after massive weight loss. I've had two rounds of reconstructive surgery with him and am happy with the results so far. I say so far as I'm only a week out from my last session. I'm not the only one who thinks Toy is a great surgeon. http://www.ratemds.com/doctor-ratings/3198877/Dr-Jonathan-To y-Edmonton-AB.html. He is also well known and respected over North America, from what I hear.
Like most plastic surgeons, they are long wait lists for consults. Over a year for Toy. However, he's worth it, of you can afford it.
Finally, AB only covers the pannus removal (skin below the belly button) and chest reduction. Everything else is user pay.
Cheers!

I had the information session and now I have had my intake appointment as well. This is going to be a bit of a process but I hope it doesn't take too long as they're now able to do 50-75 surgeries a year and it's no longer based on how many complications you have or how urgent it is needed. It's all about your position on the wait-list. I have to do the 6 classes, i signed up for 2 optional ones and then I need to meet the phsycologist and nutritionist, then final assessment... and THEN I'm on the waitlist... whew... long roads ahead. :D

I was through the Red Deer Clinic as well however I saw Dr. Farries. I know that his surgery schedule is heavier than Dr. Gregg or Dr. Menezes. I got my approval on Dec 16th for surgery. Dr. Farries took all of January off. I had my surgery on April 9th. From some of the pre-Op classes, I know that the other surgeon patients there were getting in sooner... a few months I think. Good luck for you!
3 months post op update- blood sugars are pretty good still, much better than before surgery and my A1C has dropped to 7.3 was over 9 and 11 before surgery. My blood sugars still climb sometimes but so far I am able to get them to come down. I am on NPH and Humalog insulin and Metformin. The RNY was successful for my blood sugar control. It has a flip side though...I have trouble getting enough nutritional intake now, low on Carbs, Proteins, and fluids. Feel nauseous and sick lots. Also have terrible pain all thru my body, muscle cramps, bone pain and neuropathic pain. Am I happy I did it, well I will still say YES but it is a much less enthusiastic answer than a few months ago. I guess time will tell if it was a good move- although I was kinda out of options and this has give me more time.
Funny you should mention that. I was thinking Gastric Bypass all along. But when I met with Dr. Nohr yesterday he suggested Gastric Sleeve instead. Mostly because I didn't have a lot of weight to loose, plus quicker healing, decreased chance of dumping, etc. So I am booked! I have a Feb 2015 date. Sure hope it moves up a bit. I'm excited to get things rolling. I really expected I was going to have to "prove my case" yesterday, but that's not the way it worked out. Having been accepted for a consultation pretty much meant I was in. That surprised me.
We are honored to announce our keynote speaker for the ObesityHelp National Conference 2014. Our keynote speaker is the one and only ....
I first went through the program 8 years ago. waited almost 2 years and didn't get anywhere. Back then they were only doing 25 surgeries a year and because I didn't have any comorbidities I wasn't considered as high on the list as others. I only wanted lapband back then. Then late last year I decided to give the program another try as I now had osteoarthritis in my hips. My first information session was March 6th. After sitting in the class for two hours hearing about the same thing I did before and learning I'd have to do all the things I did before I went home dejected. After a few days of wondering if I wanted to wait a few more years with hopes of getting surgery or just paying for it myself I decided that I was going to Mexico to have it done. A few days later I was booked and my gastric sleeve surgery was performed March 18th.
I'm a firm believer that everything happens for a reason. Now I look back and I'm so thankful I didn't have the lapband as it seems the success rate isn't as great as gastric bypass or sleeve and there are so many issues with it. Since starting the 2 week pre op diet I have lost 33lbs, a little on the slow side but I have PCOS so slow weight loss is normal for me.
I've heard Red Deer or Medicine Hat is easier to get into with a faster surgery time but that's only what I heard. Not sure of the actual time frame. Good luck to you both. I know it can be frustrating waiting but its worth it in the end.
Have you considered gastric sleeve? If you don't have a lot to lose it may be a better option than bypass. I don't know if Dr Nohr offers that but it might be something to look into.
