Soda

Okay I have to ask... who drinks diet soda out there? I am proud to say that I have not drank soda since August 3, 2007. (the day of my surgery.) I used to be a BIG time soda addict. cherry pepsi was my ultimate favorite. When I lived in So Cal I used to go thru the drive thru at Bakers and order a large coke with cherry syrup! I remember those days! SOmetimes I would get diet and most of the times i wouldn't. I stopped cold turkey the day of surgery and haven't turned back.  Anyway, just remembering back when...

So, my question is this- who drinks diet Soda out there? I am afraid if I start that will be opening up doors. I think I should just stay away from it entirely, but the thought of cracking open a nice cold diet coke sometimes comes up... like right about now.

So who drinks it???? I want to know! I always thought we were supposed to give it up entirely after WLS.

I am new at this but my this what is says in my papers.

Carbonation - may cause ulcers and increase your risk of failure, including diet drinks. Carbonation also promotes snacking. It also traps air in your pouch that be very painful.

Thanks... i think that's what I have read as well and was told by my surgeon. Sometimes though, we have a tendancy to do things that aren't by the rules and I want to see who is doing that out there. lol

For example, i am guilty of drinking caffeine and I am not supposed too. I am supposed to just drink decaf coffee and i don't.

Thank you for the reminder though. Good to hear... i think it would promote me to snack big time. That's my biggest problem lately. Snacking when bored.

You are welcome. You know I had to give up a lot to have this done. I smoked for 20 years off and on, and I had to be smoke free for 3-4 months before my surgeon would do the surgery. That was hard the first week but now I can't stand them. LOL I had recently gotten into the iced coffee craze. Never had coffee before and I had to give it up. I just didn't understand it until they told me why. I guess it is not because they want to punish us but help us succeed.

I am going to really date myself here.....

Remember the days of soda in returnable glass bottles?  There was a time in my life I routinely drank a six pack a day of diet coke in the 20oz returnable bottles.  I'm not sure if I even knew it was OK to drink water back then.  The trunk of my car was always full of empty 6 packs of bottles.  If I caught a sale, it was $1 per 6 pack plus the empty bottles.  Those empty bottles came in handy sometimes when we were short on gas money.....

Fast forward to today.....I have not had any soda since surgery!!!  And have not missed it one bit.  And now the trunk of my car is full of my reusable grocery sacks.  Which do me absolutely NO good when I'm short on gas money.

Laura,
You don't have any plastics to recycle from water bottles? My trunk is full and that is what I use to fill my car. LOL We used to use it for a night out for the kids but now I can't participate. So I use it for gas.

Well I hate to admit it but I do drink soda .....I have went back and fourth with the regualr and the diet but now I stick with the diet only because of the dump. My advice to you is STAY AWAY FROM IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Don't even get started. Once you start it will be hard to stop. I have done better lately and been drinking lots of water.....Keep up the good work.

yea, i think i am just going to stay away from it. i was just curious... being nosey. for some strange reason i thought i might be the only one out there that gave it up all together. you know how different surgeons have different protocols etc.

i think i would just feel so guilty if i started drinking it again.

Hey darlin'! You're looking great! I have had one sip (more like an "ip"...lol) since surgery. It was diet and flat. It really didn't appeal to me. I gave up soda 8-12 months prior to surgery, just so I wouldn't be tempted to drink it after the surgery. =)

Almost 3 years of no soda and no other carbonated drinks in my life.

I have on occasion taken a sip of soda - once diet coke while choking, once regular sprite while people around me were trying to get my blood sugar back to normal.

I do not enjoy the taste anymore at all, it's metallically tasting.
