Hi Ms. Shell, I was diagnosed with one at 15 and had it repaired when i was 18. The symptoms that I remember having are: not being able to eat spicy foods, I had the most disgusting burps, I would vomit alot, even in my sleep, not being able to eat a lot or I would throw up.

When I was first diagnosed (by upper GI), the hernia was only as big as the eraser on a pecncil. By the time they repaired it, it was the size of a half dollar and I had a portion of my stomach in my chest cavity. They repaired it using a mesh patch and I have a 'zipper" going fromunder my breats, down my abdomen and around my belly button. I am hoping that by the time I am ready for plastics, they will be able to remove most, if not all, of that scar. I am sure by now they have developed a better way of repairing it.

Good luck hun!

Hi Ms.Shell,

I found out I had one, right before I had my RNY. So, the surgeon was able to fix it while I was in surgery. Wish I could be more help to you! Hope you are able to have it fixed!

HI there,

I had one that was moderate I suppose and it wasn't fixed with the VSG but possibly with the RNY on a week. Symptoms are not as bad after the VSG actually they are almost non existent. GERD and food getting stuck in the base of my throat were symptoms for years. As well as not being able to eat spicy or hi acid food. Hope this posts help some. I now I am not in California but i saw it and wanted to add my experience to help.

Take care and be at Peace. ~Kimberley

Hi Ms Shells
I had suffered sever heart burn for years...by the time I had WLS, Arm & Hammer baking soda was my best friend ;-) Was just about to buy stock in the company..jk...but it didn't matter what I ate so I just figured my obesity was the leading cause of the heart burn.  I had no other symptoms. After WLS surgery, my surgeon disclosed that I had a fair size hiatal hernia (which she also said is quite common!) and that she was able to repair it during the procedure.  From day one post op, I have not had one instance of heart burn, and I've even tried chili! LOL  I do know that she was able to repair the hernia thru the laproscopic openings...no major incision needed..so I would say they have come a long way in the method of surgery.  Since there is an opening in the lining that allows the stomach to go places it doesn't belong, I don't think meds alone would fix the problem unless it is a very very small hernia.  I would be sure to discuss your options with your doc or surgeon.
Hope this helps some ^_^

I had one that gave me symptoms that mimicked allergies and back pain so I kept getting treated for that. It was repaired during my VSG and now I don't have GERD so the "allergies" went away. I still have some back pain though.
