does weight loss completely stop at exactly 12 months post op?
The easy answer is no, of course not. You have what is called the honeymoon period which is anywhere from about 12 - 18 months. Basically, you will absolutely lose weight during that time frame. Past 18 months it gets a bit harder and weight loss slows down but does not have to end. Hopefully by then you have developed new habits to keep your weight loss continuing if you have more to lose or stable if you are at goal. You can anticipate losing about 70 - 75% of your excess weight during this time frame with the RNY, a bit more with the DS and probably a bit less with the lapband. However, with all surgeries, relearning and getting rid of the bad habits that got you to the point of weight loss surgery is what is crucial to your success.
Once you get past 2 years out, it does get harder to lose. You can if you follow the basics of protein first, no drinking with meals and stay away from those foods that can cause weight gain.
As everyone says over and over, WLS is not a cure it is a tool. If you use the tool to its full advantage you can be successful. If you don't change your bad habits, you will fail. Once the honeymoon is over, it is up to you to maintain your weight loss.
Hope this answers your question.

exactly at 12 months post op?
Yup, to the minute...like cinderella... you turn back into a pumpkin!
LOL.... of course not... but what stephanie said covers it well... i just needed to be a little smart alecky...
it's really up to us how it works. I'm 4 years out and have gained 20 back... and right now, I'm eating a salad rather than the crackers and cheese and free Starbucks pastry that I craved.
It's all about choices, but the surgery gives us a chance to return to a level playing field.
best wishes...

I think Stephanie and Lori stated it very well. My 2 cents is you will only get out of it from wht you put in. I am only just over 5 months post op and have lost alot of weight (scary to a point to be honest) but I too am worried about whats going to happen when the Honeymoon is over.
I have made a drastic life style change as has most of the people here. I have been thrown a few curve balls and I seem to be getting back on track. Just make good decisions and choices and we should be OK.
Have a good day...........Rick
