Having a tough time

It's been a wonderful summer, spending time with my husband and kids but I'm so off track with my diet. I've gained 11-12.5 lbs. The carbs are hard to control or more like out of control. I've tried to do the 5dpt but I get a day into it and go off. I know I'm not hungry  and just bored but I still give into the grazing. I know there is no quick fixes but maybe some of you have dealt with this situation and can recommend strategies for getting back on track.

FYI - Newbies and Pre-opers, this is MY failing to work MY tool and not my tool failing me. Please understand you get out what you put into it. This is me being honest with you and me about my failings and looking to correct the situation before I reach the point of failure.

Step one: Admitting you have a problem, and knowning what that problem is. You also know what you need to do to fix, and you will when you are ready. You know your tool is still working, now you just need to work it.

I love that you admit that it was YOU and NOT the pouch. I have read a few post where the problem with the pouch not the human in control of that pouch. But I think 12 pound is far far far from failure. So don't be that hard on your self.

You are a strong lady, you can get back in control. We all have problem carbs, I truly do on my days off. When I am working, I don't have that problem, but sitting around here all day, well, I lose that battle. With DD being gone, I keep the carbs OUT of the house and that work, for me.

I wish you the best luck, and remember we are here for you.

Bekki,

You just admitted that  you have a problem and that is a great step. You can't fail if you don't quit. By you coming forward, means you have not given up & quit. So, now you know, why you have gained the weight. That in itself is a great step in getting it off. Besides the carbs, you also admitted that you are bored. Maybe you need to find an activity that will keep your mind busy, while keeping you from grazing. I am not sure if you are retired or do you still work. If you are retired maybe you need to find an activity that you really enjoy. If you keep yourself busy, then your mind will not think about the food. There are many groups out there, you just need to explore your options. There are walking groups, scrapbooking groups, arts & crafts, reading...etc..you can find groups at www.meetup.com or there might be somepeople on this OH site that are close to you & have the same interest.

Also, you might want to contact your Dr. & make a appointment with the Nutrionist. You may want to have your memory refreshed on good choices. I know, that when I am not doing so good, I try to read back through my handbook that the Dr. gave me. If you Dr. offers support group meetings, then maybe going back to one, might help you get back on track. I had my RNY on 1/16/08  and I know what you are going through with the snacking. I went to a support group meeting last night and I feel so much better. This is a life long journey that I choose to process and I know I will always have to fight the food issues. I hope this helps you and remember you have not failed if you have not quit! Best of Luck!

Be good to yourself  and journal everything - from what you are eating to what you are feeling to your vitamin and water intake.  I especially reach for mine when I feel like I am getting out of control and need to focus, though its more emotionally than in terms of eating since im only 7 weeks out.  Also, maybe seeing a therapist that specializes in bariatric issues would help... and lastly, and what helps me... is an overeater's anonymous book that I look at periodically when I need to take the focus off overeating and wrong-thinking.  You CAN do it!!!

I went on vacation at the end of July and thanks to water weight AND eating pizza in New York oh and the drinking...oh and the...let me stop.  I came back with a 10lb gain.  And since I came back I STILL wanted to eat carbs.  Cake and ice cream you name it if it was a carb I was right there lying in bed (literally) eating.  What has helped me loose 9 of the 10 PROTEIN.  Even though I was eating crap I PROMISED myself I would UP my protein to at least 100g and by golly it worked.  Now I'm a week plus back from vacation and decided to start doing EXACTLY almost to the letter what I was doing before.

So I have planned out ALL my meals and will eat them accordingly.  When I leave things up to change I GAIN or MAINTAIN and I have 17 more lbs to loose to my goal.

Oh yeah and I too am a BORED eater and boy the last week on vacation and then off sick I must have opened and closed the refrigerator at least 100 times.

What I have learned recently my restriction is STILL there...while I was eating crap I found I had TONS of room, a couple days of just protein and I'm not able to eat as much as before.

Good luck darlin and never give up!!  It's a continuous journey for MANY of us.

Hi Bekki,

Please don't think of this set back as failure, but as a challenge and opportunity.  You've lost almost 100 pounds!! That is a marathon of a journey. What's great is you're noticing something is up at just a 12 pound weight gain.  I wish I could go back to my first diet and see myself at a 12 pound gain and doing something about it, but I didn't which is why I had gastric bypass.

I am a newbie, but I've been a bored muncher for many many years.  I'd munch in my car to make my commute shorter, I'd munch at my desk to get through the work day faster.  If I am just reading at my desk, I grab a stress relief toy to play with. One day I broke three rubber bands just to make sure my hands didn't grab something to eat. I seem to have a lot of nervous energy.  I also get online on OH and write messages and respond so I don't eat.  It's a constant challenge for me, but keeping my hands busy is of the utmost importance.

I agree with many of the responses here that seeing a therapist and/or nutritionist is a great idea. Both have helped me a lot.  I hope you keep on checking in here so we can know how you're doing and learn from you too!!
