My insurance is through Kaiser. I know that they cover the gastric bypass but last time I checked they did not cover the lap band. Are there any Kasier patients here?

Hello,

I go to Kaiser Richmond in Northern California.  They cover the LapBand, RNY and VSG.

Same as the person above I go to Kaiser Fontana and they cover the sleeve, RNY, and the band. They aren't  huge supporters of band but they do offer them for their pateints and give you information on them. In the end the choice of surgery is between you and your surgeon not the people who teach the Options classes.

I agree with Creatinglee...Richmond is pro on all 3 she listed.  I think the docs preferr RYN, but I didn't get the impression they wouldn't do the other 2 if asked for.

I have my Vertical Sleeve at Southern California Kaiser.  At the time they did the VSG, RnY, LapBand and occassionally the DS.  I do know that the doctors at So Cal are not fans at all of the LapBand.  In fact they were pro RnY 2 years ago but I  hear now they are really loving the results that the sleeve off.

I know So Cal is also doing WLS in West LA not sure how the docs feel about the LapBand.

Feelings aside they will still do the surgery of YOUR choice.  I think they make you jump through more hoops getting the DS.

I had my surgery at Kaiser West LA and my doctor said that he absolutely will not do the lap band. He said that he is removing at least 1 per week. I say do whatever is best for you but those are his words and not mine.

Good Luck,

Thank you for the replies. I have a lot of research to do! I have no idea what the sleeve and DS are so I have a lot of work to do. I haven't even decided if I will do WLS for sure. I need to do my homeowrk and make a decision! I think this site will be so helpful! Thanks again!

The beauty of this website is they have forums dedicated to ALL the WLS options available to you.  So take a moment and if you haven't visit them all.

The surgeries that are just restriction only, bascially meaning they only limit the amount of food you can eat at one sitting are the LapBand and Vertical Sleeve.

The other two include a malabsorption componet in the rerouting of your intestines (way more information involved then I can give) are the Duodenal Switch and RnY.

I have Kaiser, also.   I just with to the orientation last month in Fontana and they stated the RNY, Sleeve and Lap band are covered.   Now,  I am waiting to be put into a Option class.

I know one thing, it is going to take time to get through the classes.   I would start classes and finsih that.   They said you have 1 year after completing classes to decided to do the surgery before they require classes again.
