What a great idea Rachel.........we should have a sticky post with
'responses you can practice delivering for ignorant, rude  and unsupportive people'
That is great advice!

I only just joined this site.  I had my surgery three weeks ago and I'm still recovering--slowly.  My answers would have been similar to the ones above---smart, and honest.  The truth of the matter is I think people who make comments like your friend on the board--is because they're not brave, and  they're jealous.

I've only read a few comments, but I'm already glad I joined.  From the little I've read this is a very friendly, supportive group of people.  Best, Kathy

I'm still waiting for my classes to start so I come here to read lots... I saw this and just HAD to reply that you are not alone - there are tons of people here that are really helpful and it's been super supportive for me.

Boy do I relate to your post!

When I started my wls journey I wanted to tell everyone I finally made the decision to go through with it.

I'm not an "in your face" kind of person and I hardly ever have snappy come backs so when a good friend told me that the surgery scared her with all the risks etc... and I had a pretty face and pretty hair ...and that maybe God meant for me to be fat - I was flipping floored!!!

So I withdrew - a lot. I only told a few key people and even then I've gotten quiet about it. There's such a stigma that I had no idea existed - not just to being fat but the surgery itself. I have friends that have had boob jobs and everyone is happy for them and congrats and all that but mention weight loss surgery and people get ...well, they get weird.

I talk to my therapist and close friends about it... and I plan on getting lots of support and talking to people when I start my classes and find out where the support meetings are.

I do know the next person who makes a comment of any amount of sarcasm will be met with "there's more than one way up the mountain honey" out of my mouth... I guess it has built up.

At least we can talk about it here :)

Good luck!

I have wasted enough of my life worrying about what people think of me.

You Gals are great, thank you so much for the words and understanding, and that is soo true Binda, about the cosmetic surgery compared to the weight loss surgery. It still gets me that this person hasn't said a thing to my husband, who had his done 2 years ago, and they know it. Along with gaining my health back, i think I am going to also gain some moxy to start standing up to people LOL.
