Hello! I have been researching both the gastric bypass and lap band. I think the lap band might be better for me but i was just wondering why you chose the one you did. Thank You!!!

Its a hard choice to make buddy.. I knew that with going with the lapband I would not have to change my eatting habbits like you do with the rny.  I am glad I made the choice to go with the rny.  I have made a huge change in my eatting, I have only tried sugar one time and I dumped for 3 hrs. I will never ever again touch anything like that.

The reason I went for the RNY was because the Lap Band was foreign object and since I had knee replacement (and two revisions) due to an infection I didn’t want to take any chances, plus I knew people that had the RNY and had no problems with it. Also another reason was because the RNY you don’t have to go in to have it adjusted.   Well, that was my reason. As for the decision of which one to have, it is pretty much a personal reason and what ever you feel is best for you. You are the only one that knows that.   Good luck in which ever surgery you decide to have. At least you are looking to change your life for a much healthier life style.   Best of luck!!!   Michele

I love my band!!!!  With that said it is also work, a tool to be used.  My good friend loves his rny and we laugh about the boards and the competition.   Read all the boards, talk with people and make the choice best for you! Good luck!~Ann~

I came to OH researching the LapBand and discovered the Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy.  Both surgeries offered me what I wanted which was a restrictive only surgery.  The VSG for me is more a set it and forget it.  No fills, no sweet spot, no fb, almost without it's problems.

Ultimately you have to look at yourself and your eating habits and what your short term and long term goals are.

Good luck to you.

I chose the DS (duodenal switch) at the WLS for me.  I wanted the surgery with the best longterm success rates of high %EWL and lowest rates of regain.  Consider checking out the DS forum here on OH.  Good luck - d2k

Hi!

First: Which surgery is right for you is a desicion ONLY YOU can make. It can also be made with the help of your doctor.

Second: Research, research, research. There are other options besides just RNY and LapBand. Just like another poster said, look into what you need and what your short term and long term goals are.

Third: I chose RNY for several reasons. I NEEDED consequences from sugar and fat. I would have sabotaged the band with smoothies and milkshakes and other liquid calories. One other reason is I am 3 hours away from my surgeon, I didn't want to bother with fills. Finally, when I was talking to my PCP he said one sentence that locked my decision in. he said "In my experience, the more invasive the surgery, the better the results"

Good luck to you no matter what your decision. The bottom line is want to live healthier.

I chose the sleeve too. It has the best hunger control and that was very important to me. It gives weight loss in the RnY ballpark but has a very low complication rate, similar to lap band. Plus all follow-up can be done by your PCP because you have a normal functioning stomach, just smaller.

The lap band was never an option for ME.  I don't think I could stand having a foreign object in my body that may disappear someday and also having to deal with the fills and removing fluids... I dunno, it was just my personal choice to get the RNY.

Good luck in whatever you decide :)

My insurance company only covered the RNY.  Their reason is it's the tried and true, most successful way to lose weight and keep it off.

Good luck with your decision.
