The "Honeymoon" Period...

I'm in a sharing mood...

After almost 3-years away, I decided to revisit Fitday.com today, and really take a look at what I'm eating. Well, what I saw was my weight history and it got me thinking about the 18-month "honeymoon" or "window of opportunity" we all hear so much about.

Sure enough... I fit the pattern, I hit my low weight at 20-months post-op, and it's been a slow climb up the following three years. I'm up 29.5 pounds from my lowest weight... let's do the math, that's approximately 10 pounds per year. let's do some more math, and that rate... well, you know where I'm going. Okay, let's say you know where I'm NOT going.

I, for one, thought I would NEVER allow myself to gain more than 10 pounds back... ha... "never say never." And, while I'm still 125.5 (can't forget the .5) pounds lighter than my pre-op weight... I definitely see how easily the pounds can creep back on. Guess I should have figured it out when I couldn't zip my jeans and had to buy a size larger.

But, I'm not beating myself up here... yes, maybe a little disappointed. But, hey I'm still down 125.5 pounds and that's a success. And, now like a "normal" person I'm gonna deal with my 29.5 pounds before it turns into 39.5, 49.5 and beyond.

Well, it's helped me put "pen to paper" - maybe it will help someone else, too.

While I have never reached my "goal" weight, I understand what you are talking about.  I have a "magic" number in my head and when I reach it, I lose weight.  I don't care that I have never reached my goal, that still may happen, but I know one thing, I am NEVER, and yes I said never, going back to what I was.  I just can't, life is so much happier now, and life is good.  You are a winner Patty, why because you realized where you are going and you are stopping it now.

Best wishes, you and I can both do it.

Thanks, Diane.

I never hit my goal, either. Though I'm not sure what that number is, I never received one. I think the Gov't says my BMI should be 24.9 and then I'd be in the "normal" range; so I adopted that as my number. Not sure that's a realistic number for this pear-shaped body. Right now my goal is to get rid of this 29.5 pounds.

And, "yes" we both have, and can do it!

Patty I so loved reading this post and I just LOVE you posting on the WDYET thread!!

Thanks, MsShell...

I used to be a WDYET regular and would sometimes even start it. It really does help keep me aware of what I'm putting in my mouth. It also gives me ideas.

Patty,
THank you so much for sharing this... especially after I just vented about my eating binge and having the munchies. Great reminder that we ALWAYS have to watch what we eat and that the weight will come back if we don'****ch it.

Don't beat yourself up over it. At least you are getting it out and like you said dealing with it before it gets out of control. Did you see Eric on Oprah from the Biggest Loser show. He was on Larry King the other night talking about his weight gain after the show. It was a very big eye opener for me for sure.

I think you are beautiful!
hugs,

Thanks, Jaime,

You are looking fabulous... hope things are going well in Northern Cal. I do remember meeting you as a pre-op - when you lived in So Cal.

I did happen to see Eric on Larry King... Let's face it - living on "the Ranch" is a lot different than the real world. And, statistically I believe I read that (don't quote me here)less than 5 percent of people who lose 100 pounds or more, without some type of surgery, keep it off (not sure of how much, length of time, etc. - but, you get the drift). Surgery helps the odds tremedously - but, weight gain can happen to anyone.

Take care,

I'm coming up on my one year anniversary and it's so good to read your post and realize the difficult part of this won't be losing the weight but keeping it off.  I need to know that now and be prepared, if that's possible.  Thank you for sharing wih us Patty and please don't beat yourself up over this.
