I did it! You can do it too!!
I completed the Huntington Beach Surf City Half Marathon on Sunday!! It was a chilly morning, but the weather turned out to be fabulous for running. A sunny clear day that wasn't too warm. I completed the 13.1 miles in 3 hours, 33 minutes. Just a few minutes faster than I did in Long Beach back in October.
I've been getting the same remarks from a lot friends (both WLS and non-surgery, overweight and healthy weight) that they wish they could run in an event. Or that they would love to someday enter a race. You know what?? YOU CAN!!!!
Growing up I was always the fat kid in gym class. I could never keep up with the other kids, and I detested the days that we had to run. I hated my body for being so sluggish and slow. I envied the lean skinny kids that could run without any effort.
After WLS, I began to realize that maybe I would be able to finally run. It took me a long time to accept the fact that I could. (the details of my journey are in my profile)
Even now, I'm still relatively slow when compared to most runners. But you know what??? I'm still out there, and the race is always against myself and it doesn't matter how fast everyone else is. Even with these last 40 pounds to lose, I still run and what most people don't realize is that running is just as much a mental sport as it is physical.
With determination, and a strong mind you can run!!
So if you are considering trying to run....or walk an event....please do it!!! You can do so much more than you realize and the exercise is good for you!!! Even if you try and don't quite do as well as you had hoped...you are not a failure! You have attempted to do something that many many people would never attempt.
If you are a beginner, this is a great training regimen to get you started: http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml

Tia D! Maybe one day I can pull you in a wagon or something!?? I could use the extra challenge!!! Ha!!!
There have been events where I have seen seniors with WALKERS or CANES and they are so fast I can't catch em!!! I hope I'll be that fast in my golden years!!
love ya!!

What an inspiration. Running is something that I have made as a goal of mine. I have always had asthma and it was never under control enough that running could be part of my life. I talked to my pulmonologist pre-op and he feels that between weight loss and new and improved asthma medications, I should have no problems making my goal.
Thanks for the website too, because I was looking for a good starting regime.
Hugs,
Barb
The SF Marathon is in July...the 26th. I'll be there. I've been thinking that I don't want to travel AND run 13.1 miles. I'll also need to come home pretty quickly, maybe even the same day.
So.....I'd like to come up a few days early visit all my friends in the area, have a good time, and then run a 5k that morning. So I was thinking I'd enter the progressive marathon.
