Girls ONLY (men read at your own risk!)
Everyone seems to like to pass this "fat stores estrogen" thing around but that's not, in fact, the case. .
Fat cells actually converet other hormones in your body TO estrogen--like little estrogen factories. Estrogen make the uterine lining grow thicker--this is why it is dangerous (and increases the risk of endometrial cancer) when very obese women don't have periods--all their fat cells are busy producing estrogen, the uterine lining keeps growing, doesn't get shed, and can turn cancerous eventually. Lots of estrogen, that is unopposed estrogen, is what makes you NOT have a period
After you start losing weight, your body actually has LESS estrogen in it, and that is why your periods can return to normal , and also why some women experience hot flashes without being perimenopausal.
wow , i am completely the opposite. when I was very obese , i would have my period every month , it would last for about 10 days, very heavy bleeding, once i even fainted in my FEMA trailer , no kidding, my 5 year old son ran and got the neighbor, a man of course , and rushed me to a hospital. But now after losing 100 pounds, my periods are great, maybe 5 days max , and normal flow. i love it.
