Pre-op liquid diet - need your thoughts

Okay - next week is my procedure and Dr. Stewart just requires clear liquids starting at noon the day before and nothing after midnight.

Many doctors have you do liquids to make sure your digestive tract has minimal amount in it and also to shrink the liver.

Any thoughts - I know I don't have to be on liquids but wondered if it might be a good idea???

Guess it is time for all those strange thoughts to start going through my head................ and need some advice from the veterans!!

Thanks! Teri

Some drs. require 2 weeks of liquids.

Some (more in Europe) like the milk diet.

Others, like mine, wanted 2 days of liquids (no red as it interferes w/dye) to shrink the liver.  Whatever makes it easier for the surgeons is ok with me.

I asked Dr. Stewart why he just does the day before liquid diet. I forgot his exact words but basically just do the day before. He had a good reason but I have taken many good drugs since then.

Hi Steph, I also had to do a two day liquid diet as it assists in cleaning out the stomach and bowels completely.  It won't hurt either as your body then gets used to liquids rather than solid to liquid to non on surgery day.

I am one week post-op today and I ate Jello, popsicles, juices, and broths.

Good luck, Sarah

I dunno. When it comes to surgical prep I think it's always best to follow your surgeon's advice to the letter. I would just eat light til then and start the liquids when he said to.

I have to do 5 days, and it starts tomorrow!!   Not sure why he would only require one day, my doc stated the shrikage of the liver to help surgery go easier, gives them more room to work, especially with a lap procedure.  If your doc doesn't worry about it I guess I wouldn't either, but I don't think it could hurt any to do more if you wanted to.  I think it would just help more, but that is my non-medically educated opinion!!  Good Luck!!

I say be happy Dr. Stewart doesn't torture his patients with liquid diets or bowel cleansings. LOL
