I have done alot of research, watched many youtube videos (many of Tom's), and done alot of reading on Oh. Im just starting to get the jitters before surgery. it is so close. there are only 34 days and I am so excited also.

I had the weirdest dream last night. I had the surgery done, everything went fine, and I went home. the same day Istarted feeling strange so I went back. all of a sudden I got there and started coughing up staples and tiny metal bits. all the dr did was say oops that shouldn't happen and walk away. It was very strange to say the least.

now for questions.

How long after surgery do you have to start protein and vitamins?

should you take any vitamins before surgery?

Thanks,

Kelly

The jitters are definitely normal at this point! My DH had to talk me down from the ledge a couple of times. LOL

Every surgeon's protocol is different, but mine had me on protein drinks about two days after surgery. I started vitamins as soon as I got home from the hospital, but some people wait a few weeks. In hindsight, I wish I had waited because they are such a hassle to get down early out. I crushed all my pills, poured the capsules out, and mixed everything with applesauce and it was NASTY!! Your body has enough stores to last you at least a month or so. Do what your doctor says, but if he leaves it up to you just do what you're comfortable with.

Yes, I think you should take vitamins pre-op. At the very least, take a good multivitamin, Calcium Citrate, Biotin (to guard against hair loss) and a good probiotic.

Dreams are curious things.  Try not let it upset you.  Your mind is just trying to make sense of all that you have read and are feeling.  As to when to start your vitamins, your surgeon will advise you on what to start and when.  And as far as starting vitamins before -- a good multi never hurts but beyond that check with your surgeon before starting any vitamin regimen.  Some vitamins alter the bodies ability to clot and your surgeon will be able to tell you whether it is advisable to start these and/or when to quit taking them prior to surgery.

My particular PCP has me on a regime of vitamins to get my body really ready for surgery.  My surgeon asked that I go off the vitamins one week before surgery.

I've had some WEIRD dreams too.  I think it's just our subconscious way of trying to deal with fear and anxiety.  Big life changes!

Awwwww, I know how it is to feel jittery and scared before the surgery.    I have to say, your scared dream was better than most, as far as being cute when you tell it.   I know it wasn't cute or fun when you were dreaming it!

When I had my second c-section, I knew I was going to have staples on the outside.   Staples were pretty new then, and I'd had sutures for my first section.   I wasn't worried about the main things:   having a new baby at age 30, how my older daughter would react, how I'd be able to afford to rear another kid, the surgery itself, the health of the new baby.....   Nope, I was obsessed about the staples.   I would sometimes start thinking about it at work and start crying.

I think it's a good idea to take multivitamins before surgery.   You don't want to start taking large doses of fat-soluble vitamins before you actually begin malabsorbing them, though.   Just a nice multivite would be good, along with a lot of attention to getting enought protein and fluid before surgery.

Good luck as you go through all this.

I started multivitamins a few months before surgery.  Also I started a probiotic.

I tried to eat protein as soon as I could (things like yogurt, cottage cheese, etc.)

I also have had very strange dreams.  Mostly mine have been about foods, and eating too much.  Cheese fries (which I don't eat normally and don't like anyway) and cookies.

In the dreams I'll be eating something in vast amounts, and then I become aware I'm hurting myself or damaging the DS surgery.  Strange.

Thank you everyone for all the advice I am glad I am not the only one with odd dreams.
