What is the length of your common channel, and are you having problems?

As I read this board I ALWAYS learn something new! I am in the pre-op testing phase for a revision from a hellish lap-band to a DS.  I read about common channel lengths and some peoples are too short and they have issues.  I never thought to ask my surgeon what he does or talk to him about what I think it it should be.  I know if its too short you can have gas issues, but if its too long will you not lose as much or as fast?  And if so, what is too long?

Thanks!
Ann
Hey Jules

My cc is 150cm. I barely have any bathroom or gas issues at all. I have a BM about every 2 days. I started out with a BMI of 43, 284 lbs., 5' 8". I think I've lost weight at an average rate, but have been in a stall for the last 3 weeks. We'll see if my longer cc will make it more difficult to get to goal and keep the weight off. I hope not!

HTH!

Jules

Hess method, 10% of overall bowel, so no idea what it is.....that said it works wonderfully and I am very very happy with where I am.
Gratitude is my attitude

I have a 75 cc and I do not have any bowel or gas issues. In fact, if I do not get at least 120 g. of fat in a day, I struggle with slight constipation.

75cm common channel - no issues.  When I had a few, it was bacterial overgrowth related - a round of FishZole cleared all that up and I'm back to 'no issues'.

So it seems between 75cc and 100cc should be safe?

mine is 90,   no issues,  just wanna lose some more weight
I owed it to myself to research the duodenal switch before consenting to any other weight loss surgery and so do you.  Check out DSFacts.com and DuodenalSwitch.com for more information.  Remember think twice, cut once, revisions are risky and revision surgeons are rare.

75cc here and mainly constipation for a while post-op - it seems to be working itself out these days though......I'm just gonna say it really got better when I started getting at least 3 protein shakes per day

the same things that gave me gas pre-op are the same things that give me gas post-op.....usually if I eat these things in moderation, they don't really bother me at all......if I overindulge, I pay for it.....so I do try to be careful to not do that

each surgeon has their own method for figuring your cc - mine always gives a 75cc....

Also, one other thing, I strongly believe each person's DS experience is just that - their own.  I've seen people with the same surgeon, same cc length, etc...have two entirely different outcomes and issues...it truly is an individual experience....some can eat more carbs than others, some can eat more sweets than others, some can eat white flour with zero problems....so you can get a general idea of how it'll be for you, but honestly, you just won't know until it is you....

good luck

That is a great point that you bring up Peach.

I remember researching during my pre-op phase hoping to find some commonalities that would equal success. The only variable of success that was constant that I could find is the DS itself. At some point, you just have to realize that the DS will work.
