Difference between BPD and BPD with DS?

Hi everyone... pre-op question here.    I keep reading about BPD only and BPD with DS and was trying to figure out the difference between the two.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the only difference is that with the BPD with DS, the stomach is cut vertically (into the banana shape) rather than horizontally with the BPD only?

I was reading about it on a page from the American Society for Bariatric Surgery site here:
www.asbs.org/html/patients/bpds.html

I just wanted to make sure that I read it right.  I would imagine that the majority of you would have gotten the BPD with DS procudure..

I am not an expert but my understanding is the BPD is an entirely different surgery from the BPD/DS and has largely been abandoned.  There are other differences than just where the stomach is cut.  If someone is suggesting the BPD -- run the other direction.  And if you are being told "it is practically the same thing" you are speaking with someone who is terribly and dangerously uninformed.

Red is right. The BPD involved making a pouch (sort of like gastric bypass) at the top of the stomach, removing the lower part of the stoma*****luding the pyloric valve, and then attaching that pouch to the small intestine. This operation caused a lot of nutritional problems and diarrhea and has been abandoned, at least in North America, in favor of the DS, which creates the sleeve gastrectomy and preserves normal stomach function and emptying.
The common channel with the BPD was also made shorter than what most surgeons make with the DS.
Bottom line - the BPD is outdated. The DS was designed to improve on the BPD, and it has. The names cause confusion, which is unfortunate, but now at least YOU know the difference.

What about as a revision..my surgeon wants to do the bpd as a revision from an open gastric bypass..says it is a shorter and safer surgery as compared to full DS revision..with same results? anyone have any thoughts on this?

Thanks for replies.   And don't worry, no one was telling me they are the same thing, but I just wanted to understand the difference between the two.  I'm just trying to answer all of my nagging little questions before I take the plunge!

Ok, my surgery is next week, and on my chart it has me written down to have the bpd/ds. Is this the safe one, or the outdated one?  I just want to make sure I'm not going in to have something that's totally going to mess me up!

Did you not see what they wrote? BPD w/DS is fine. That is the DS. It's the plain BPD you don't want.
