Topic: High AST/ALT

I just had my two year checkup and everything else looks great except for my AST and ALT levels (the internet says these are things related to the liver). They are 162 and 126 respectively, which is four times higher than what's considered the high end of normal.

My doctor's office doesn't seem too concerned; they're saying it's normal for DS patients to be this high.

Is this something I need to concerned about? Is there something I should be doing to lower them?

Topic: Being Refered to Dr Theriault In Moncton NB for the DuoDenal switch

I had the VSG almost 6 years ago, I had 2 babies about a year or so after my surgery I got preg with my first and then almost exactly 2 years after i had my second daughter, so i have gained quite a bit of weight since my surgery, so i decided im done haveing babies ( im almost 40) and i need to get my life and health back on track again for my babies! So my Family Doc is referring me to Dr Theriault in Moncton as she does the DuoDenal Switch, does anyone have any idea how long the wait is ?

I've had my PCP handle all bloodwork for about 13 years. The suregeon's staff was about as knowledgeable as any other doc about nutrition, really. The DS is a mystery to most medical professionals. Even nutritionists and dieticians don't get it.

What you need is a PCP that is curious enough to partner with you to find a good balance and adjust as needed. I find best luck with younger docs. Bring your PCP information (printouts, links, and especially a diagram) of the DS to keep in your file. Also provide them with the list of annual labs. Don't count on your PCP doing all of the work with knowing your levels. Learn how to read your test results and insist on keeping a copy so you can compare with the last time and catch new trends and make adjustments. The docs aren't so good at that.

With the DS, you're probably never going to have "stellar" protein levels, so normal - even the low end of normal - is good. If you can fit more in, even better, but it looks like you're doing all good things.

I moved to Venice, FL a couple years ago. I am 20 years post op and still get regular/annual checks. I see Dr John Southerland in Sarasota.

I used to get 100-120 grams a day and my protein was around 6.8. Now I get about 40 grams a day and still around 6.8. I have been about 40 grams a day for last four years.

Normal A1C is 5.0 - 5.5. There is nothing wrong with being a bit lower. Glucose around 90 is also normal. You don't need a surgeon, just a primary care.

6.8 is good. Just keep up the good work!

I don't need as much as you do. I am usually between 80 and 100. And that is plenty for me.
