Hi again, Lester would like anyone's suggestions on how to go about getting financing for older persons who wish to return to school. He would like to attend the local junior college (Kirkwood) for the baking to begin with. Need all the help we can get as funds are very very tight in this household. Have gotten some web sites but seem to be geared for high school students going on to college. I think he would qualify as a displaced worker due to having to close his business due to health problems prior to the wls. Anybody got any ideas?? Thanks and bless, Carol & Lester

Your fist stop needs to be the financial aid office at Kirkwood. They will begin by having him fill out a FAFSA form which is the first step (sometimes you have to do this online.) That will automatically evaluate if you qualify for federal and state grants and assistance. Usually the school will also use this information to qualify you for assistance directly from them. Anyway, this is probably more than you want right now. Just call Kirkwood and ask to set up an appointment with financial aid and be ready to fill out alot of paper work. Good Luck, Eileen

Carol, Call kirkwood and ask them for help and plus you might want to check into voc rehab since he had to change careers due to health. i do think there are grants for non traditional students (that are students that are returning to school at an older age.) you might also look into job promise. if you need anymore help let us know i am sure we all can help you and give you more ideas.....lynda

Carol and Lester, Eileen works at a private university and is right when she tells you that you need to set up an appointment with the Financial Aid office at the school. They can direct you to more specific forms of help. The first step will be to fill out that FAFSA paperwork. It really is a pain, but well worth it. When you are at the financial aid office, ask them about displaced worker help or other services/money that may be available. Go to www.fafsa.gov for the online version of the fafsa form. You can get it done while you wait for an appointment with the Financial Aid office and get everything into motion. Lester, good luck. I am so proud that you have found an interest and something that you want to do now. Aren't we so better equipped to handle and take on challenges now than when overweight? I love a good challenge these days! Good luck and let us know what you find out. God bless, Andrea
