Topic: RE: My first appt is tomorrow!
My first appointment was May 29. My surgery was August 20. Most of the delay was because my PCP wasn't writing the insurance letter correctly. They wrote 3 or 4 different versions until they got it correct. Once that happened, insurance approval took only about a week. Wellmark is great to work with. Hope this helps.

How long from start to finish did it take you to get your surgery? Just curious
Topic: Anyone a State of Iowa employee? Using their insurance?
Is there anyone in here who is a state of Iowa employee and using their insurance? I'm considering a job change and was wondering if the state's insurance covers weight loss surgery. Thanks in advance.

Topic: RE: BC/BS of IA
Hi Tiffany
It was great to hear from you. At this point in the game, BCBS has all my paperwork in accordance to thier guidelines, I received and email back today from them telling me to call on the 16th in regards to thier decision. They required like 2 yrs weight history, 2 yrs of bmi, and how my PCP has worked with me in regards to weight loss, my cardio release and a l etter from my PCP, so once i had all that it was submitted, i have my fingers crossed that since all requirements have been met that they will approve me:)
have a great weekend

I know someone else already responded to your post, but I thought that i would let you know about the hoops that I had to jump through for BC/BS to get my surgery approved. I didn't have a whole lot of co-morbidities so I had to have six months of a physician followed diet before they would approve me.

I am three weeks out from surgery at U of I. I have nothing but good things to say about the team. Dr. Samuel did my surgery. Debi and Amy are fantastic. They will keep you on track. I had Wellmark BC/BS and so far they are paying very well. Be sure to attend the monthly support group meetings if you can. They are very informative and its good to see people who are further out and have already experienced what you are going through.
Good luck,
Karla
Good luck,

And I was hoping someone might have some information on what I can expect tomorrow. I will be going the the U of I in Iowa City, and have BC/BS Blue Access for coverage. I've read all I could on their website, but I was hoping someone had some first hand experience to share with me!

Topic: RE: Dr. Eibes lap band patient
Hi Candi,
I am a patient of Dr. Eibes — I had Lap-Band surgery August 5. My surgery went great. I did have to stay overnight at Methodist because I had an esophageal hernia repair we weren't expecting. But my pain was minimal and my recover has gone great. The only real PAIN I experienced was in my shoulder, and that was a result of the gas they use to "blow you up" so they can see inside you when they operate. As for my actual incisions, they were pretty much pain free. A little sore, but nothing I couldn't handle.
So far I've lost just over 20 pounds. I'm getting to the point where I'm hungry more often and able to eat a little more than I want to. But I get my first fill September 17. Counting down the days! I have trouble now with certain foods — eggs, bread, chicken, rice — they go down a little hard and I have to take TINY bites and chew, chew, chew. But I'm able to tolerate most everything else. I stay most satisfied when I eat protein first, followed by complex carbs. And I've lost my chocolate cravings completely!
Anyway, I'm rambling a little, but if you have any questions about Dr. Eibes, the surgery, pre- or post-op stuff — let me know. I would be happy to answer any questions I can!
Good luck!
Jeni
