Hi Kristina! Just wanted to let you know about another option. VSG or vertical sleeve gastrectomy! It is a restriction procedure like the band. I'm not sure which- if any- surgeons are are doing this procedure in Iowa. I would be happy to give you more info about it (just pm me) or there is also a VSG (vertical sleeve surgery) forum on OH as well!

Have you considered the Lap Band? Since you are a researcher, you might check it out.

Hi All, Sorry to break any threads but i'm looking for some information. I am going to make an appointment with my PCP for April 30 and I know he will give me all the info I want/need but I'm an inpatient person who has done more research than I care to admit. I have been a member of Weigh****chers, lost 31 pounds and regained 23 pounds (179 was my lowest weight). I currently weigh 201. I have Type 2 and my a1c's are all over the charts. I'm pretty physically active but can't seem to get the food portion under control. I have been working out with a personal trainer since Nov 2007. The scale is not going down. I'm 5'5, weigh 201, and have recently started seeing elevated B/P as well as some skin irritation because of my stomach size. (I carry all of my weight in my midsection) My BMI is right at 34%. Research shows i'd be a candidate at 35% BMI with co-morbid conditions. I don't think WLS is an easy way out by any means but I certainly feel it's an option for me. I've watched my uncle who is a diabetic lose both legs (amputee to both knees) as a result of diabetes. I'm 37 years old and don't want to struggle with health conditions for the rest of my life. My question is with my current weight...am I crazy to consider WLS? We have a center of excellence about 20 minutes south of me and review of their program really impresses me. Thanks in advance for any information or support you may have. ~Kristina
Topic: RE: Just waiting now
I am having RNY on May 12th.
Yes, the waiting is difficult. I used the time to research, ask questions, and search within to be sure, as sure as one can be, that this life changing decision was right for me and my cir****tances. It is valuable time and you can use it to your advantage. I started a journal and periodically I write my thoughts down. Life is too precious just to sit back and let life go on while we wait. Blessings as you proceed.

Congratulations! I'm so excited and nervous for you! Good luck with everything.

Contratulations on being approved. Are you having RNY or lap band? I hope my journey ends that well and that quickly. Have you scheduled a date for surgery yet?
Topic: RE: Just waiting now
I went to my orientation session January 4th. Then began the process at the bariatric center Feb. 1st. They faxed my paperwork to the insurance company on March 18th and approval was given on April 4th. That has been my journey.
Topic: Approved for surgery
Today I learned BC/Bs approved my surgery and the date is set for May 12. I have an array of emotions. I must admit there is a part of me that wants to turn and run (if only I could jog), but the greater part of me is already making preparations for what needs to be taken care of while I am in recovery. I would appreciate hearing from encouraging people of ways they prepared mentally and emotionally for their surgery. Blessings, Jaylynn
