feeling sick
Have you called your dietian? Dr Evanson did my RNY on 3/21 and I was feeling awful last week. Not the usual symptoms of dumping syndrome, just nausea and tired all the time. I saw Dr E on Monday and he told me that I was dehydrated and upped my fluid intake to 80 ounces (how can I get in more fluids?) and said that I may be having "mini dumping syndrome." He also said that I might not be able to tolerate milk since it is a sugar. Dr E also told me that some patient's have to have IV fluids if they don't drink the specified amount of fluids, he told me I wasn't there YET. I then saw the dietian and she told me not to worry about eating since I wasn't getting that much nutrition from them, I was only eating about 3 ounces a day, and to just drink for the rest of Monday to get rehydrated since I was so far behind in my fluids and then start on Tuesday with getting in all my protein along with 80 or more ounces of fluids. I felt well enough to go to work on Wednesday, but then yesterday afternoon I got real weak and had to go home early. I didn't go in today because I still felt weak and had a headache this morning. So I went from Monday morning until yesterday afternoon without eating anything. Yesterday after I began to feel weak, I ate a few small bits of banana and some mashed potatoes last night.
I bought some soy milk and couldn't get past the first sip. The dietian gave me some ideas about how to fix my protein shakes. She said to try it in different things, to think outside the box, try peaches, blueberries, chocolate, anything. So I have had 3 shakes where I just took a can of peaches sweetened with splenda and dumped the whole can into the blender with my protein powder and ice. It makes a wonderful smoothie. Tonight I had my son fix one with a cup of water, ice, protein powder, and a packet of SF Hawian Punch. I had to eat the biggest part of it with a spoon. I think it is even better than the peach smoothie.
One more thing I found out was that most of the protein powders are made from milk. I found some at GNC that is made from milk but is lactose free. It hasn't bothered me yet.
The protein powder I got at GNC is Isopure. It has 50g. in 2 scoops. It was one that the dietian suggested I try. So far I have been able to tolerate the taste. I got vanilla. In fact I don't even taste it. You just have to put in enough of the other flavrs to cover it up. They had other flavors like green apple, chocolate, fruit punch, and I think cherry. It is quite expensive. I get full from the shake too and then I can't eat. It doesn't help that you have to wait 30 minutes before and after a meal for drinking and take 30 minutes to eat. That's 1 1/2 hours it takes for a meal. That's why the dietian told me not to worry about eating. I went over my protein yesterday because I had 2 shakes and I did get in my water. I had a few bites of dinner last night but I didn't wait the 30 minutes before and after to eat. Just keep pushing those fluids, that is what has made me feel a lot better.
