Please help me!  I was approved for surgery over 4 months ago. I am scheduled for a lap rny with Dr. Inman at St. Vincent next week. Pre-op testing is done. Bag is packed. Work has been notified and my house is in order. I am ready...but maybe not. I just read a post regarding co-pays. I have not received anything from either Dr. Inman or St. Vincent regarding payment arrangements. I assumed that I would be billed after surgery had been performed and they had submitted to insurance. I am totally not prepared to pay anything up front.  I will be crushed if I am not able to have this surgery after waiting so long for it. What can I do?

I didn't have to pay anything out of pocket but even if my max out of pocket hadn't been met it was never mentioned to me either.

I had to pay my $500.00 copay(are paid at time of service so u wouldnt recieve a bill, it shoud be on your insurance card what the copay/deductable is) the morning of my surgery to St. V's.  I also had to pay upfront for the shrink visit which was just over 100.00.  After that my insurance paid for everything.  Now I do have more copays for my follow up visits that I pay now when I have my appointment and then my insurance pays the rest.

My insurance didnt pay everything. I didnt have to pay up front.  The hospital billed me after my surgery and I called for payment arrangements and they have a couple options.  I wouldnt worry too much.

You could call the hospital...make arrangements in advance.. I had 2 insurances so there was no co pay for me it also would have been 500.00 but the other insurance picked it up.  I too had to pay for the shrink up front. Honestly can't see them saying no 500.00 no surgery... and then again y ou can charge it to your credit card... Call the hospital... Linda Kay

I was never asked for payment on the day of surgery...Stop worrying.  Your insurance will be billed and then you will have to pay the copay or your portion if you and 80/20 plan or some other insurance type.

Unless they ask don't worry about it.  I was at St. V with Dr Evanson.  I did have co-pays to meet but it was all settled in the billing after insurance met it's part.  Since all the lab work and x-rays were done ahead, they were on a separate bill.  Most of my out of pocket co-pay went for paying for those.  I had hardly any out of pocket for the surgery itself.  It all depends on how your insurance company works.  Let them do their part. (then review everything to make sure they did cover everthing they are supposed to) Then worry about what you owe. They won't cancel your surgery if you are approved. Relax.

Thank you to everyone! I have waited so long for this surgery and I think that I am conjuring up all kinds of potenial problems because I am so afraid that something will happen to cancel my rny. I guess I really do just need to try to relax and quit thinking so much! I do feel better now that you all have answered my question about the billing stuff. Everyone has had different experiences with this and the bottom line is that it really will all work out. I will just deal with things as they come up instead of trying to solve problems that don't even exist yet. Thank you all again. Marsha
