How Long In The Hospital??

Ok, if everything goes ok, about how long are you in the hospital after surgery? I am wondering if I could have this done over spring break and be ready to go back to my three classes. I will have 11 days off. Is this even feasable for me to think of? I really want to get this done before another hot summer. I go to school on Mondays and Wed. On Mon I have three classes and then on Wed I only have two. This is all pre-nursing and nothing strenous at this time. Many thanks for your opinions.

Which surgery are you having done? I had the Lap-Band and went back to work in 2 weeks but would probably have been fine in 11 days. I would definitely think you would be fine if you are just sitting in class. As far as the gastric bypass goes, I would think you would be okay, but not for sure. Maybe someone else on here can give some more insight. Best of luck to you! Sara

I am going to have the gastric bypass done. Hopefully, laprascopicaly (sp???) which I understand there are no guarantees, that they may start that way and if complications, have to go ahead & open you up. Janice

They generally say 2 weeks with a normal laparoscopic surgery, however a couple people I know that have had it done felt well enough to go back in less. But it just really depends. Like you said, if they have to open you up, of course there will be more healing time needed, therefore you'll probably need to take more time out. Also, god forbid, there were any complications, you may need extra time to recooperate with those as well. (I'm not saying that's going to happen, I'm just saying that it's something you can't really "prepare" for.)

Hi Janice, The usual hospital stay for lap is 2-3 days, open about 3-5 days, depending on how your doing I guess. I was in the hospital for 2 days and that was it. I'll admit I was really sore. Most people are cleared to go back to work in about 2 weeks, So as long as you don't have any complications I would say that you'll be fine. Take care and goodluck to you. Keep us posted

Hi! I am having the laproscopic(spelling? hell I dunno) gastric bypass. I understand I'll be in the hospital from Monday morning until midday on Thursday. I know they will let me go home Wednesday if I feel up to it. Hope this helps! Kat

I had open rny gastric bypass and I was in the hospital 5 days. I don't work. I'm a stay at home mom, but I can tell u the first 4 weeks were tough. I'd never been cut open like that and it was hard but worth it.

I had RYN done. I was in the hospital for 2 days & was moving slow for about a week. I think the key to a quick recovery is walking & I walked every hour I was awake. I feel that 11 days should be OK. Best of luck to you & keep us posted!

I had my RNY on Wednesday and went home on Friday. I was given the choice of waiting until Saturday (and probably should have waited) but I was in a hurry to get home. With the lap surgery, the first two weeks were the hardest for me. I did have some complications but overall I was feeling well enough to get back to my life in two weeks.

Sorry, when I replied the first time, I totally forgot to include how long of a hospital stay. Again, I had Lap-Band surgery. My surgery was on a Monday morning and I went home the following morning (Tuesday). My doctor likes to see his lap band patients the day after to check in on them, but a lot of doctors will send you home the same day. I liked the fact that I could stay over night.
