Topic: Surgery at Georgetown Wednesday with Dr.Sonnanstine
Hello Fellow KY peeps.
If you have had or are going to have Surgery with Dr.Tom can you give me some feedback. I live almost 2 hours from Georgetown and am worried about after care if an issue comes up.  I moved to KY from Indianapolis In January and haven't had the greatest luck with local Dr's.
I am happy with Dr.Tom and his team so far but am curious what the surgery experience is like?

Thanks everyone...

Topic: RE: couldn't see the ring of my band during an EGD?
Hi Jan,.. I am going to guess the person doing the EGD is a gastroenterologist and not a bariatric surgeon (they're usually the ones doing those wonderful procedures.) ..I would suggest you have a copy of this report sent to Dr.Sonnanstine and then make an appt with him to explain things a little better.   I am not part of the bariatric community any longer but still involved with specialty surgeons (breast cancer). It's my experience when a doctor outside his specialty reads films and detects something suspicious- he or she will then send them on to the specialist.. this isn't something they deal with on a daily basis.  Therefore, often times how they explain something outside their expertise is often a little vague.  I am trying to be kind to the docs I deal with daily..lol
Dr. Sonnanstine should have been sent the report and believe me if he did you would have been contacted immediately if there is reason for worry.  I know this from experience.
I hope all has turned out well, and remember...we don't go the a heart specialist for a kidney problem..so don't take a gastro's word for a realizeband question..you have the best around..trust him for your belly problems...Good luck and please let us know how you are doing!!

Topic: RE: Revision from RNY to DS

I've been through your story, so you are not alone. Never think that. I'm here anytime you want to talk.

You are not screwed. You just need to convince your husband  that you are worth the drive or flight out of state for your life. Putting it in those terms makes the travel seem a little less daunting. I was prepared to travel to CA, but Husted moved here JUST as I was getting started w/ my revision. I had a hell of a time w/ insurance, but it finally all worked out.

If you are going to travel, please see Drs Greenbaum, Rabkin or Keshishian. I say this with all sincerity. You do not want to place your life in the hands of someone that can't be reached should you have a complication. This is obviously just my opinion, and if you want to talk more on the backline, just PM me.

Topic: RE: Revision from RNY to DS
Thanks hillofbeans.  It seems like I've had so many doors slammed on me lately with trying to get this DS.  :(  Over a year ago, I was wanting to get the revision from RNY to DS but was told that my insurance company required that I see my PCP every month for a year before they would approve it.  So I went thru an ENTIRE year of monthly visits with my PCP.  Right after my very last appointment, I emailed Dr. Husted's office and was told the news that the Somerville, KY hospital was no longer allowing DS surgery or revision to DS of any kind.  This seems like a nightmare.  I thought about Dr. Spaw and contacted him.  Well he doesn't do revisions to DS.  I keep gaining and gaining.  At the 6 month mark, I had lost about 100 lbs.  At almost exactly 6 months, that's when the weight loss STOPPED!  Then, I started gaining.  It's been almost 4 years since my surgery now and I've gained all of it but about 40 lbs.  Some of the problems that i've had pre-op i've been noticing creep up on me.  I can't believe that I will have to go all the way to NJ if I want to have a revision.  If I have to go to California, I might as well go to AZ and have Husted do the surgery.  There's no way that I could get my husband to drive in NYC for those doctors.  So I guess I'm just screwed.

I have a friend that did have the DS done by Husted and she lost over 300 lbs.  She was wanting to have a revision done and is having a hard time getting ahold of Husted also.  I emailed her yesterday to give her the news that he's moving to AZ.

Thanks for the info.

Leslie,

I just got back from Las Vegas and I enjoyed every mouthful of it.  Just don't be too hard on yourself.  Have fun and if you do eat too much (like I did), you can get it off when you get back home.

Topic: RE: OT: Thinking of Moving to Kentucky From Calif.
I live in Glasgow which is around 30 miles from Bowling Green.  The storm that we had a few weeks ago is the most rain at one time we've had for 30 years.  It was bad as I had about 2 ft of water in my basement.  It's a very rare occurance but it does happen.

As for weight loss surgeons, my surgeon is in Louisville.  The closest ones are Louisville and Nashville.  Bowling Green had a surgeon years ago but not anymore.  Also, Elizabethtown used to have one but I don't think they do now either.

There is a support group in Bowling Green but I've never been.  I prefer to go to Louisville where my doctor and friends are.

If you have any more questions, feel free to let me know.

Topic: RE: Revision Surgery
Being a revisioner myself, there is no way I would go for either the ROSE or the band over bypass procedure. I can say with quite a bit of confidence that ROSE doesn't work. Keep your money and spend it elsewhere, because it is highly unlikely that your insurance would cover it. I have a friend who has the band over bypass, and she is currently seeking another revision. I've also read of so many here on OH having the same procedure, and not much success.

I'm obviously biased towards the DS, as it has the best long term success rates. The only problem with that is now we don't have any local surgeons in KY who perform it. Closest would likely be Dr. Greenbaum in NJ. I think he's probably the easiest on insurance also, as far as accepting a wider variety.

Topic: RE: How do I GAIN weight??
I, personally, would not try to step back into old habits like eating junk to put weight on. Speak with your doctor about digestive enzymes such as Creon. They will lessen your malabsorption. In the big scheme of things, you are still early out, and trying to gain a couple of pounds can quickly turn into a completely different direction, and it's MUCH harder to get off than it is to gain. JMO.

Topic: RE: Revision from RNY to DS

There are none close to us anymore.

Dr. Greenbaum in NJ does RNY to DS revisions, but lately people on the DS board are saying that he's becoming particular on who he will revise. Specifically people w/ BMI over 50. Too many chances for complications, I guess.

I *think* that one of the NYC drs (either Pomp or Roslin) do DS revisions also. I'm not sure which one, they might both do them.

Then, of course, there is CA where you have Rabkin and Keshishian. Both are very respected revision surgeons, but be aware they charge sizeable out of pocket fees up front, that you may or may not be re-imbursed, depending on what your insurance pays.

Needless to say, there is absolutely no reason to throw your money away on the ROSE procedure. It doesn't work, and it will be completely out of pocket money for you, most likely.

I also would not be sucked into adding a lapband over my RNY or revising my RNY to another RNY or ERNY by any local doctors. You will likely be disappointed with either choice. Obviously, I'm speaking only from talking with people I know who've had these revisions, or read it on the board. I have no personal experience with either.

One thing I can tell you to do is to visit the Revision board, as well as the DS board. You will get lots of good advice on surgeons on the DS board. Also visit www.dsfacts.com.

I also find it very disappointing that Dr. Husted has not kept in contact with any of his pending, current, or former patients on what his plans have been at this point. I would not recommend anyone to him anymore. My view on that does sway from day to day, but today I would not. Many of us who've already had surgery can't even get a response back on where our records are or how to get them. Also, should any of us have complications while he's MIA and out of touch, I guess we are just screwed. Enter with him at your own risk.

Feel free to ask me anything else, and also visit those other boards! Good luck to you.

The Rose procedure is not covered by insurance and there are very little stats on it and what stats there is, are not  too promising.  I also thought that if you don't' get info from Dr. Husted that I know Hilofbeans on the DS board knows who he was sending them to or you could called the office in Somerset at the hospital and ask Cathi or Gayla, they too should know who he was sending his patients to.
