Fat Discrimination

Do you encounter fat discrimination where you live? For example, have you ever had a tough time getting a job due to being overweight? What other experiences have you had where you felt discriminated against for being morbidly obese?

I've lost a lot of weight, and I do notice that people treat me differently---especially at work.

happens every day - which is unfortunate.  However, working in HR for 15+ years - I know that job discrimination based off obesity is next to impossible to prove - it probably happens more than we know, but to prove it is next to impossible.  I defended my company against and EEO claim.  We won - we proved that the clown lied on his resume and wasn't qualified and that's why we didn't hire him.

Oh yes - big time once. I applied for a job at Deloite & Touche (sp?) in Detroit and was definitely discriminated against. A friend of mine got a job there pretty quick (she was my age but thin & attractive). I got an interview and my friend told me to wear a nice trendy light-colored suit, because that's what she wore & she was complimented on her attire and professional dress. So I wore a nearly identical suit to hers. Oh - and I had more education & more experience than my friend - a LOT more. I went to the interview & instantly I could tell something was up. The lady didn't seem at all interested in the interview. I could read the look of disappointment on her face. She asked me really general questions and treated me like I was wasting her time. She didn't ask me NEARLY the amount of types of questions my friend was asked (and it was the same interviewer). At the end of the interview she said, "if by chance you do get a call back, I suggest you wear something more conservative and dark in color".  I said, "Now that's funny, because my friend who interviewed here 2 weeks ago and got a job wore the exact same suit and you complimented her on her attire. I wonder what's different."  The lady was stuck and stammered for an answer and said something about conservative partners.  I said, "Hmm, not quite the same advice you gave her, huh?" She couldn't have hustled me out of there fast enough. Now, I could care less. I wouldn't want to work for them anyway. Completely their loss.
-Maggie- A "STUCK" episode is kinda like the big "O". If you have to ask, you probably didn't have one.

Are you kidding!  Try being obese AND over 60!!  People treat you like a LEPER!  They act like they can catch it or something!  The only ones who ever treated me with open arms were the  . . . RESTAURANT OWNERS!!
