DMO  I am living proof that you can lose a lot more than 40 lbsa   I was not a candidate for bypass and  I have lost 108 lbs.    15 months ago I was on oxygen 24/7  could not walk more than 30 feet and now I am able to walk  even run but not fast or far  lol.   Do not let a surgeon sway you into a surgery you do not really want or scared of.   There are many many success stories of lapband patients

Thanks so much for your input!  You are proof!!!  I am not in a rush to lose, I just want to lose, and be able to enjoy life... thanks so much!

I was concerned about the same things but after reading posts and soul searching I feel confident in my choice to have the lap band.

I just weighed today at the doctors office, and I'm down 105 pounds, with maybe 10 more to go.  I'm very pleased with my band.

I had a surgeon try to steer me towards the RNY, and had I been larger, I would have given it more consideration, but with the amount of weight I needed to lose, I didn't think I needed such a drastic surgery.

My doctor tried to persuade me against Lap Band as well since I had a 63 BMI to start with.  I am a little over 13 months and have lost 146 pounds and still going.  I really feel that the lapband will keep me from regain as the tool will always be there.  With RNY your pouch can slowly stretch and your body will oftentimes repair itself and start to slowly absorb again - which can lead to weight regain.

Everyday I am more and more glad that I did the band.  I don't have to worry about malnutrition problems and future problems from lack of absorption and when I am old and even greyer, worrying about meds that I might need to take, but my body can't absorb it because of the RNY.

Good luck - follow your gut!

Yeah, my DH's surgeon gave him that same load of crap!  But let me tell you.  My DH is 68 and weighs 330 pounds.  The surgeon is basing my husbands 'ideal weight' at 164 pounds!  I'm very sorry but at 6' tall, even if he was a much younger man I think 164 is totally unreasonable.  He will be happy to get to 205 in 2 years.  The top weight the military allows for that height.  Since I have lost 95 pounds in ayear, I KNOW he can lose 120 in 2 years.

Hi, I am at almost 1 year post surgery and have lost 85% of my excess weight and could not be happier.  Minus 103 pounds from surgery day and 113 from my highest weight.  Good luck in deciding what is best for you.

Hi Lapbanders!  I finally finished my 6 months required by my insurance and have been cleared from the dr's to go ahead for insurance approval.  I met with the surgeon yesterday and up until then, had my mind set on having the lapband.  He said, he does not want to sway me either way, but the average weight loss for banding is about 40 %.  Well, my stats, i need to lose about 100 lbs, and I have no co-morbidities to speak of. I am healthy (except for the excess weight).  He said, I would have more of a weight loss w/ gastric bypass.. So, for stats, I am only going to lose 40 lbs?  I don't want to go thru surgery and come out still overweight!!!  I am terrified to have bypass, I really wanted the band! Does anyone regret having the band over the bypass?  I would really like to hear your comments because I need to make a decision before they send it to my insurance for approval! I really want to reach my goal, but will the band work ?  what do you think?  Please help me and making a decision! How successful were you with the band?
You need to spend some time reading through several pages of posts here because if you do, you will find that people have lost much more than 40 lbs or so...there are tons of  people who have lost  much more than 100lbs!!!

It is what you make it, and I believe 3/4 of the battle is in the head.  I need to lose a lot and I choose to be positive and totally believe that I will do it.

Good luck!

I have had my band 3 1/2 years  It took me a year to lose all of my weight.  And lose it I did.  I am wearing a size 4-6.  I got smaller than I ever thought I would.  The best part of it is it has actually been very easy to keep the weight off.  That is the main goal of all of this, isn't it?  A lot of the people at the support group I go to have gained weight back, over 50 lbs and then some.  They had bypass and lost their weight fast.  Go with the surgery you feel most comfortable with.  Faster weight loss is not always better.  Losing all your weight and not gaining it back. That is real success.  Good luck.

I, too, want/need to lose 100 pounds. My goal is 140, my start was 245 and pre op right now I'm 235. Statistics show the number the doc gave you, but keep in mind that the statistics include people who the band didn't work for, people who have health problems battling against them, and people who just plain didn't do what the doc/nutritionist said.

I'm going to use a coworker as a prime example for why lapband statistics aren't better. All of what I am about to say is despite the fact I've told her otherwise. She insists that she will lose weight and will still be able to eat bad foods, just not as much. She insists that she will not need to exercise. She thinks she's just going to get banded and be able to live the same lifestyle and lose weight. While this may work for a VERY SMALL number of people, overall bandsters still have to diet and exercise.

I've been on LBT, here, and a group on cafemom. I've seen waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too many amazing lapband success stories to believe that I'm only going to lose 40-60 pounds. You get out what you put in. Plain and simple. If you work your a$$ off , you'll lose every pound you want to.
