Medications

This is kind of a piggy back off of the migraine post.

I take 3 Calcium, Magnesium and Zinc tablets everyday to keep things "moving" if you know what I mean. Once you become "Banded" will I be able to take any type of tablet medication. Liquid Tylenol is what I told I can have if I get any type of pains.

I was told that I would not be able to take birth control pills anymore because my body might not be able to absorb it. So NOW I am thinking that this might pertain to any form of tablet. My diabetic medication and all. Oh I so do not want to have to get on diabetic shots. I am only board-line diabetic.

I am even more scared now...

Hi Dee,

Don't panic yet!   I read on this site somewhere that there is a liquid version of Metformin.  I would check with your doctor and see what medications you have that can be changed to liquids and then figure out where to go from there.   Hope this helps!

Hi Mary!

YES, I was told that the pill would possibly not fully absorb into the system. So if you here something different PLEASE let me know. I am taking them so I can have a monthly... PCOS kind of thing.

I was told that the pill would possibly not fully absorb into the system.

I am in no way medically qualified but this seems very unlikely. We do not malabsorb anything we ingest and that applies to medicines as well as foods. I don't think I have ever said this before but in this case if this is what your doc is telling you, I would actually get a second opinion. Perhaps contact the manufacturers of the band you are getting. I know that Allergen are very good about responding to queries.

And I cannot see why it would be specific to the birth control pill - between us bandsters we must take more or less every type of med going and I haven't read of anyone not absorbing them.

I fully accept I may be totally wrong! But ask someone about this!

Highest 290, Banded - 248   Lowest 139 (too thin!). Comfort zone 155-165.

Happily banded since May 2006.  Regain of 28lbs 2013-14.  ALL GONE!

But some has returned! Up to 175, argh! Off we go again,

Hi Kate

Kudos on a job well done!!

My doctor didn't actually say this to me. He only told me that he wanted me to stop taking the birth control pills for a month before having the surgery to prevent from having blood clots.

As far as the other stuff goes, various people who have been "Banded" have told me that we might not absorb the medications fully. I think it was the Nutrionist that told me this stuff also. I cannot remember .... so therefore that is why I was asking because I wanted to know from other banded people.

I was going to ask my doctor all that stuff AFTER I get my approvel from the insurance company. That seem to be the on-going issue right now. This freaking waite time!!

I am kind of like jumping waaaaaaaaaay ahead on this stuff I know.

Sorry if I confused anyone. I am kind of still learning about it all.

I have no issues with my birth control and have been taking them since I was 15.  I was told to stop a certain prior to surgery and resume a certain amount of time after.  I am two years out and still take them daily.  Tammy Lynn xoxo

Hi Tammy!!

Thanks for the information!!! That is also a big relief...

My doctor told me he wanted me off the pill for a month before surgery. If I am not mistake the Nutritionist is the one that told me that once you have WLS you might not be able to absorb pills. We had some RNY people in the class also... so it is possible she might have been directing that statement to them. Because I believe she also stated that some RNY people become lactose intolerant.

I had the realize band put in on Dec. 2, 2008 and was told to resume my magnesium when I left the hospital.  At first I was grinding it up along with my 2 thyroid pills and blood pressure medicine and have had no problems.  I have quit grinding them up and am now able to swallow the 2 pills of 250mg of magnesium whole along with the 2 thyroid medications.  I do still cut my Allegra D in half.  I have had one fill of 4cc's, and was at the Dr. office yesterday and inquired if it was alright that I was taking these medications whole and was told it is ok.
