This stuff can be overwhelming if you let it. So many people telling what is right to do and wrong to do. Then you do your research and talk more to other people. WOW!!!! It is alot to get your head around... at least for me.

I too am curious about the Metformin. I am going to post a separate message and ask about it specifically, if you don't mind.

Dee,

There is no malabsorption of food or medication with the band.  You will still have a fully-functioning stomach and intestines.

I can't imagine why you wouldn't be able to take birth-control pills unless they're huge and can't be cut up with a pill-splitter.  (I cut up all my meds)

Some meds (especially time-released formulas) are not supposed to be taken in divided doses (pills cut up, or capsules opened), but I'm sure your doctor or pharmacist can tell you the best way to take your meds and whether they're available in liquid form.

The only possible "malabsorption" of a medication that I can think in a lap-band patient would be the result of the tablet or capsule not flushing through the stoma quickly enough, so that it sits in the stomach pouch and dissolves slowly.  The slow dissolving might interfere with the release of the medication into your blood.  A greater concern for me is that medication sitting in my stomach for too long can easily irritate my stoma.

Ohh wow...

I am going to ask my surgeon if he can get me the liquid version of Metformin for after having the surgery. I do NOT want that Metformin just sitting there. It makes you sick as it is.

As far as the pill goes, those little suckers are really small.

Thanks Jean!!!
