Low Potassium?

I have a question about potassium. I was banded on 24 Feb and am trying to get my exercise in, but I am having trouble with my legs cramping up badly. Im assuming that Im not getting enough potassium. Im taking my daily multivitamin (no potassium in there) and Viactiv (contains Vit K). Im also drinking my Atkins shakes (one a day). Sometimes I try to add 1/3 - 1/2 a banana to the shake and blend. Im just still cramping up too much and not getting much exercise in because of it. My legs are feeling sore...kinda like after you have a 'charlie horse'.

Last summer my PCP put me on Lipitor. I was actively attending the gym and was up to 30 minutes on the treadmill followed by 30 minutes on the elliptical. When I started on the Lipitor, I was exhausted and weak after the first 10 minutes. I stopped taking it for a while. Im now on Crestor and feeling better than with the Lipitor...but during that time I had stopped going to the gym.

Anyway...Im wondering if my potassium is too low or if it could be the statins? Any thoughts of how I can up my potassium?

My next appt is scheduled for 1 April and I have a message in with my nut...just looking for your thoughts. Thanks!

The leg cramps suck!!  My nut had me cut a banana in 3 parts and eat with each meal about 2 weeks and it helped.    I also take 2 flintstone childrens vitamins a day with breakfast and lunch and that has helped.
Good luck!

The problem is that you really have no way of knowing if it is due to potassium or not unless you have your blood checked.  The  muscle issues could be from lots of things.

Potassium levels are really nothing to mess with, potassium has a major role in how (and if) your heart beats.  If you suspect that your potassium is low you really should get your blood checked.
