Can someone be banded with a hiatal hernia?

Before I call the  surgeon's office on this, can anyone tell me if they had a hiatal hernia prior to being banded and if things got worse after it? Throughout my whole consultation with my surgeon, I was focused on getting RNY, so he said he would fix the hernia. However, I've decided to downgrade to Lap Banad now, and was just wondering if any of you were banded with a hiatal hernia and how things are going. I have "severe" acid reflux now and have to live on Prilosec daily to control it. I believe it's from the hernia. Let me know your experiences and I will hopefully be talking to  my surgeon soon- busy man!

i had problems with it for years however I wasn't diagnosed until my surgery. My PCP just went ahead and put me on protonix and it worked so nothing further was done. Well when i had lap band surgery surgeon said he found large hiatal hernia and repaired it. I have not taken anything since.

Did that change how the surgeon did the surgery, or the time of the surgery?  Any effects on your recovery time?

Mine was actually found while I was having the band surgery. He fixed it during my operation and I haven't had any heartburn since! I didn't know I had it until I woke up from my band surgery. It worked out great. Good luck!!!

I had the absolute worst reflux/heartburn before being banded. Nexium every day. During surgery he found and repaired it and have had none since. None. Aside from the pounds falling off, it was the BEST thing about being banded. The best. I suffered for years and not anymore. Hopefully your surgeon will fix yours when he puts the band in and it will help you, too. Good luck.

My surgeon also fixes them while doing lapband surgery.  The surgical consent reads lapband with possible hiatal hernia repair.

I didn't have one, but if I did..it'd be fixed now :)

I had horrible acid reflux because of a hiatal hernia which was diagnosed before surgery. It was fixed as part of the LB surgery and I haven't had any acid since it was repaired. An additional benefit of the surgery.

I had terrible reflux all the time and just assumed it was from eating the wrong foods and being overweight. On the day of my surgery, the doctor found a rather large hiatal hernia (which I obviously didn't know I had), and said he had to fix it before banding me. So...I am fixed!! LOL!! I have been off of my daily Prilosec since surgery and LOVE my band!!

So, I went in for a band and got another necessary surgery that helped me IMMEDIATELY feel better...glad I did it!

Good Luck!!

Everything happens for a reason so, I am taking it a step at a time. I can do it!

Any good surgeon is going to fix a hiatal hernia while doing your WLS anyway. Make sure it's clear you want it fixed.

I had a very large hiatal hernia and they had to use mesh to repair it.  I had suffered with reflux for years and took Prevacid for it.  I was taken off the med after surgery and have never had one episode of reflux.  It's wonderful and I think I'm doing pretty good.  Still deal with head hunger and telling myself I don't need to snack all evening.  I am so happy to not have heartburn and reflux!
