Can someone be banded with a hiatal hernia?

The surgeon will almost always repair the hernia at the same time as the band surgery.

I have a hiatal hernia (have known about for years) which my original surgeon chose not to repair (don't know why - I guess he couldn't be bothered).  An undiagnosed or unrepaired hiatal hernia can contribute to band slippage (I think that's what caused my band slip), so it's best to have to repaired.

I never had reflux before my band surgery, and the only times I've had it since then were when my band was too tight and when my band slipped.  Unfills stopped the reflux immediately.

I have a local acquaintance who had a hiatal hernia and bad reflux before she was banded.  Her surgeon fixed the hernia and she hasn't had reflux since then.

I also have a hiatal hernia that was diagnosed prior to band surgery. I let the doc know I wanted it fixed and informed the man who gave me the barium test that the doc didnt seem interested. He wrote in his diagnosis that he recommended it be repaired. When I woke up I was told that the doc refused to fix it. I am now left to wonder if the problems I have arent related to the hiatal hernia. I never have that "full" feeling and I am hungry after 1-2 hrs. I do have a feeling of something laying on top of my stomach, like it isnt going down. Common sense says if you squeeze a ketchup bottle w/ no top the ketchup comes out. If you have a doc who wont fix the hernia DUMP HIM.

I remember having heart burn as a child! LOL Always had problems with it..but it doesnt travel up, so Its not reflux. I started dating a guy years ago and his dad told me horror stories about his stomach bleeding. So, I finally went to a dr. They did a scope and found ulcers. I took protonix for 3 months and the burn came right back the day after. Ive been taking OTC Prilosec since then...that was 2001.

Found out I had a small hiatial hernia during my UGI for the band. Just had another UGI a couple weeks ago and its still there. dont know if thats causing my issues, but Im setting up a second opinion.

I had no symptoms what-so-ever, but during my band surgery, my surgeon repaired a large hiatal hernia.  He said that right where he wanted to place the band was the part that was through the diaphram.  It caused a lot more pain afterwards, but everything went well and all is good.

Thank you everyone for your quick reponses! Well, it sounds like my surgeon just may fix this thing that's been giving be problems all these years afterall. From all but a couple of you, your hernia was repaired. I will make sure to ask him to fix that while he's in there rooting around! You are all so helpful. Thanks again my OH friends!

I'm sure they will still repair your HH during your band surgery.  Why wouldn't he?  I had mine repaired when I had surgery and I couldn't even tell except that I haven't had reflux in over a year!

You'll be fine!  Just make sure you remind him about your HH before surgery.

My doc almost forgot!
