Sondra, I am so sorry to hear that you continue to have problems. You are such a caring person and always think of everyone else first and that is what I love about you! BUT, you do have to take care of YOURSELF TOO! Don't feel like you need to be everyone else's rock ALL of the time...take time for Yourself Too! You cannot heal yourself if you are always on the go and stressed..so Slow Down, Relax, and only do as much as your body lets you, don't pu**** even if you feel you have to..everyone will understand why you are not there 100% of the time. Topic: RE: Has anyone had RNY without complications or side effects?

Well said Michelle.  I do believe there are lots of RNYers out there who have not had any complications, and for that reason, we haven't heard from them.  I think choosing what type of WLS should be based on what you as a patient will require.  Some need the malabsorbtion and dumping to keep them on track, some feel they need the loss of the Ghrelin to ease their way (me and my appetite - sheesh!) .  There have been horror stories of complications with VSG but as Michelle said, they are mostly immediately post op or within weeks after and generally not too many that have occurred way down the road (that I have read about)

Topic: RE: Has anyone had RNY without complications or side effects?

Everyone has different reasons for the surgery they choose. I don't want to start a " my surgery is better than yours"  Both have advantages and disadvantages.

I know one of the reasons I went for VSG was the risk of complications was higher outright ( more leaks) but then in the later times it goes down.

The risks with RNY are smaller outright but strictures , ulcers, bowel obstructions, hernias, fistulas, and major malabsorbtion.  With the sleeve you don't have the old stomach to possibly  give you issues ( I didn't like the idea of the stomach being able to develop an ulcer and not being able to scope. ) I also liked the idea of getting rid of the ghrelin.

Some of the " complications" are actually part of the surgery. Like the malabsortion or dumping.  You want malabsorbtion to give you that " boost" ... yes you malabsorb vitamins as well as the food.  Gall bladder stones are also very likely because of the rapid weight loss.  Reactive hypoglycemia etc....

You have to also remember that the program in manitoba is still very new. Hopefully the complication rates will reduce as the surgeons do more of these surgeries.  Studies have shown that the experience of the surgeon is a key component of the rate of complications.

As well , even with the complications WLS is still much better for us. The risk of the surgery is lower than the risk of remaining overweight . Diabetes has complicatons of being on dialysis, and killing your kidneys, strokes , heart attacks, leg ulcers and amputations..... I knew I had to take the risk of the weight loss surgery to have a chance to live a long and healthy life. And improve the quality of my life. So worth the potential risk.  But that said, you need to really balance the risk/benefits and decide if it is worth it for you. I always tell people if they can lose the weight any other way - do it. I knew after being obese for like over 20 yrs I wasn't and couldn't do it AND keep it off. Now i believe I can.
