Approved!
I just got approved for my sugery by MCARE after a year! I am happy but a little scared as probably all of you can relate to. I am now waiting for Hurley Bariatric Clinic to get in touch with me to set up my surgery date and whatever presurgery tests they need me to do. Does anyone here go to Hurley and know what presurgery stuff I will have to do?
Thanks,
Susan
Congrats! I just had my open RNY done at Hurley on March 13.
After I got M-Care's approval, I heard from the Clinic as soon as they recieved written word by fax.
They set me up for my pre admission testing. Breathing test, EKG, Urinalyisis, Blood Work, Chest X-ray, and a talk with their Medical Dr. This is all done in one day and usually on a Wed.
You will have a long day and you should try to have an early app't if possible so you can go to the 3:00pm Nutrition class afterwords. Otherwise you will have to do Nutrition another week since they only do them on Wed afternoon and without this class you can not have your surgery.
My initial date was for the 2 weeks after the pre-admission testing. They cancelled only because I had a test result that needed checked out ahead of time.
I don't know which surgery you are having but no matter what the staff at Hurley Hospital was excellent! I had great care when I was there, by both nursing staff and physicians assistant. The PA's are there almost 24/7 and they co-ordinate between you and the Dr's and get things done faster then the nursing staff could do on their own.
Good luck!
Thank you for your informative reply. I am having the RNY. I have one more question. Did you have to go on a liquid diet before the surgery to shrink your liver? If so, how long? I have lost 20 pounds in the last month so that should help. I'm glad to hear Hurley is good. I have only been in Genesys. I also heard that my Doctor, Dr. Obeid, has been out sick and should be out for at least another month so I might have to have another doctor. I don't think I want to wait until he is better. My husband has time off this summer but not in the fall once school starts again.
Thank you so much,
Susan
The only special Diet I had before surgery was either 24 or 48 hours and it wasn't bad. They give you a list of what you can have at the nutrtional class. The class is a real helper, you get a lot of info that day and there is no way you can retain it all but they also give you a Notebook with everything in it to take home with you.
Now I had open RNY, from what I understand if you are trying for the lap RNY you may have a liquid diet to make surgery easier but I am not sure on that.
Dr Farhan is good but M-Care only pays for him if M-Care is secondary insurance so be careful about the Dr you get. I know this cause this is what I had I don't know the other surgeons in the group so I am no help there.
Good Luck
Hi Susan, I am also going to Hurley. My date is on the 14th of June. I had the same pre-admission testing as above. Mine was on a Wednesday (the 23rd). However, now they have moved the nutrition classes to Thursday mornings from 9-11. (Did that the 24th) As far as pre-surgery diet goes, today I started my 15 day liquid diet. I am having Lap RNY and that diet is required for that surgery. I do not like the taste of the protein shakes, but I can force them down. They do give you a full feeling, so that is good. When Renee calls you to schedule your surgery date, she will set up a date for pre-admission testing. Then you will recieve a packet in the mail that you will have to fill out and take to the testing. Also, you will order your pre-surgery diet kit. Yummo! Enjoy.
