I am in the process of getting the insurance approval for my surgery (lapband) through the Hurley bariatric center in Flint MI, wondering if anyone can share their experiences, how llong it took for approval, what tests you had to go through, anything you can share at all would help. I am excited and nervous, and anxious. Thanks everyone, your all so supportive

I had RNY at Hurley in April 2004.  You will stay on the burn unit for recovery so that you receive better care.  I found the doctors through Hurley to be the most caring individuals I have ever met.  I had Dr. Obeid and this man saved my life.    I heard he was still out on a medical leave, so not sure if he is working right now.  I did have some complications but I found the doctors to make me number 1 priority as I was tr eated.  This decision changes your life.  And I would highly recommend Hurley as the place to have it done.  Good luck.. and keep us posted.  Let me know if you have other questions. Hi there fellow WL journier;     No worries; both my daughter and I went through Hurley. Daughter had Lapband, I chose RNY! Daughter has lost 135 plus since Aug 2006; and I have lost 96 since Dec 06 with surgery in Feb 07! Aproval depends on what insurance you have some are faster than others; and how many hoops they make you jump through. There are a lot of sucess stories at Hurley; come to a support meeting first Monday of the month at Hurley fitness center! They also have a great baritric ball in the spring for their patient and families.. I can help you with any ?'s you may have on either side since I know first hand about Lapband or RNY! I had a few complications but would do it again in a heartbeat! Sorry I did not do it sooner; saved my life too! No more B.P. meds, no more diabetes, no more C-pap machine at night! Never been happier; and in a lot less pain than ever in years. Staff at Hurley clinic is friendly and helpful; hospital sometimes you need to take charge of your own health care! I had Dr Wagner, daughter had Dr Farhan.. Feel free to ask any ?'s you wish. Best wishes with your journey.. Sincerely, Judy R

I had mine done at Hurley in August.  I didn't have any complications at all.  I was extremely pleased with Hurley Bariatric center.  They were very communitive with me, and actually were able to move things up after I had appointments made. I was pretty pleased with Hurley Hospital.  The admitting Nurse was terrible at putting in my I/V.  After 3 tries, she thankfully went to get another nurse that was very good at it. It was also a little confusing at check in.  The surgeon was extremely excellent, as was the anestesiologist team.  Then the after care nurses in the burn unit were very caring and competant.  I had a different nurse every shift, but the were all good.  I highly recommend Dr. Farhan.  He was very nice and helped me understand everything about the surgery in terms I could understand.I hope this helps you out some.

I also had my RNY at Hurley and I was ever so pleased with them.  Dr Farhan was also my surgeon and I would recommend him to anyone!   The nursing staff was excellant as well as housekeeping.   I did have some complications that were very rare due to an infection in my spine we did not know about ahead of time.  Dr Farhan and Dr Dannon preformed emergency surgery on me and I was in the hospital for a month.   Now I tell you...you can find out how things really go in a month and it was excellant!   I was almost an employee!  Everyone knew me and I had no problem with Nursing staff at all and housekeeping used a different solution on my floors when we found out the original one set off sinus attacks. Dr Farhan and Dr Dannon along with Dr M were in daily and the PA's were excellent when they were not available.    Once your insurance gave me my approval it was a matter of 4 weeks before scheduled surgery date.    Good Luck!

Hi, I also had surgery thru Hurley.  I had RNY and Dr. Farhan was my surgeon. I was so pleased with him.  He talks to you in language us ACTUALLY can understand!!  He is very personal and friendly.  His staff is great too.  Always nice and willing to help.  The hospital staff was great also.  As you go thru this process you will meet a Dr. Minasian.  He will have the final say about your surgery based on everything complied on you along with chest xrays and lung test.  He is awesome - probably the best doctor I have ever met.   The hardest part of this process is getting your insurance requirements together.  Keep calling Hurley staff to check on it.   Good Luck to you, Cindy  :)

I had my surgery at Hurley I had Dr. Farhan, and like others said you will get to meet Dr. Minasian.  Pretty much like everyone said after surgery you stay at the burn unit, and there are nurses right there for you.  I had no complications and I was walking pretty quickly after surgery.  It was a great experience so I hope you have a plesant one too!

If I lived closer to Minasian he would be my PCP I love the man!  He took time each and every evening that I was in the hospital to talk to me for awhile and not just about my health.  He was so very kind and considerate.  Good Luck

I'm about to have my surgery in 2 weeks - and I'm starting my Pre-Op Liquid Diet today!!   I was originally going to have the Lap-Band surgery at UofM.  After going through the UofM program for almost a year, I learned in the pre-surgical consultation that they weren't even doing the Lap-Band Surgery!!!  In all that time - no one bothered to tell me that they weren't even FDA approved to do it!  (I cried all the way home and almost gave up on my WLS).

The next Monday I called Hurley.  After telling the Nurse what happened to me, she scheduled my appointment for the next day - and I met my surgon on Tuesday!  I've been hooked on Hurley ever since!!   They're terrific.   I'm excited and very anxious about the surgery - but I know this is going to save my life!! Good Luck to you!
