Has anyone had trouble getting approval from HAP for WLS?

HAP paid for my WLS and my tummy tuck.   It has been 4 years since my WLS, and it is much easier now.   Just be mindful of their requests and it will go fine.   The will probably require you to go to Henry Ford, but that is a good thing, because they are GREAT!!!  E-mail me with any questions.

Thanks for the reply. Lucky for me, I have to go to Henry Ford. I have my benefits through them. I've researched a lot about the doctors and everything I've heard is excellent.

I have HAP and I'm using a DMC doctor at Harper Hospital.  I called HAP in the beginning and they sent me the requirements in the mail.  I found exactly what they sent me on-line here:

http://www.hap.org/internet/bam/policy/member/28_693BARIATRICS_M_10.htm

Specifically, it reads:

  1. All treatment must be received at a facility that is HAP/PHP/AHL Approved for Bariatric Surgery utilizing a multidisciplinary approach, involving a physician with a special interest in obesity, a dietician, a psychologist or psychiatrist interested in behavior modification and eating disorders, and a surgeon with experience in all aspects of bariatric procedures.
  2. The surgery must be ordered and performed by a HAP/PHP/AHL Approved surgeon specializing in Bariatric Surgery.

I don't know what they consider HAP approved.
