Aside from the swallowing part of chewing it - I was told that it also causes excess air to get into your pouch which can stretch it unnecessarily.

I do all the time, even swallowed it once or twice, with no problems (thankfully).  My NP said it just gets pooped out , I dunno if it actually would stop up a stoma...I guess if you chewed enough pieces

Ok so I am bad I know~ I was told not too but I am a serious gum-a-holic. I could not live without it seriously.   I chew gum all the time~ never in my life have I swallowed my gum but I imagine it wouldn't be good.  I am sure they advise against it because of the chance of it getting stuck in your new stomach opening.  I guess I probably do risk it and someone might yell at me but I have chewed it since about a month out cuz I couldn't take it anymore~ they also said it could cause gas but it never has with me.  I chew sugar free gum and it really helps me to keep from snacking~ so thats my story.  Hope it helped. kristi

Good question.  I'm not sure what PNC said about gum chewing.  I do chew gum, but not all the time and I don't chew the piece for long anyway.
