About me/BLUE PLUS OF MINNESOTA...

Hi, Im new here. I will start out by telling a little about me.  I'm a 27 year old mother of 5, ages 9, 6, 3, and 9month old identical twin girls. I have been married to my husband for over 6 years. When I met my husband I had 2 kids and was about 300 pounds. He didn't care about my weight and he loved my kids llike they were his own. We only dated for 3 months b4 we got married. After 2 years we had a daughter. I was very sick while pregnant with her so I actually lost weight. I was down to about 250 by the time she was born. I did the whole yo-yo crap for a while with no success. Then in 2005 I found motivation somewhere deep inside, (well actually the motivation came from my husband having an affair) It don't matter, at least the mativation came from somewhere. Anyhow, I congered up the guts to change my life.I went to my doctor and she put me on Phentermine, I started drinking green tea, walking around the neighborhood, and cutting back on calories. In less than 3 months I went from 269# to 216# It was great, i was happy with that weight, even though it's still overweight. I hadent been that thin in several years! I wore a size 14, I took my kids to the pool, I had incredable energy! My husband and I worked things out and life was great. Winter came and I put on about 15 pounds, but took it off again by the next summer. I was maintaining my weight for the most part. Then in late 2006 I found myself pregnant again. This came as a BIG shock to my husband and I because we were in the process of saving up for my husband to have a vasectomy (sp?) I was also working on losing some more weight, so needless to say I was not thrilled about having another baby. But at my first doctors appointment that all changed as I seen my TWINS on the ultrasound screen! Right then and there I realized that I wanted them more than anything. The pregnancy was rough to say the least! I was put on bed rest for most of it, and force fed by my husband because the doctor said that my twins were in danger of being born severly underweight, by 26 weeks gestation they were just over a pound each. Well all the bed rest and eating worked well as my girls were each a bit over  6 pounds at birth! And I was more than 80 pounds heavier!! And have since gained another 30 or so pounds.   I plan on having a RNY at Abbot northwestern hospital in minneapolis mn. So far This is everything I have gotten done.... 1) I went to my primary doctor, who sent a letter to Abbot and my ins. 2) I went to the informational seminar, filled out  that form too. 3) Started my 6 month supervised died. 4) got a phyc. evaluation.   Right now I only have one more appt. with the dieticion on the 4th. then I have to sit back and wait to hear from my ins. company. But I am worried because I have actually gained about 20 pounds during this supervised diet. Which brings me to my question......  - does anyone have BLUE PLUS of minnesota or know anything about it? Could you give me some pointers on things like how long it took for approval, or if I have a good chance of being disqualified for surgery due to my weight gain? any information you have would be great!

Hi, welcome and congrats on your twins! I also have BCBS and once I jumped through the hoops it only took 3 days for approval so I was lucky. They did say it could take up to 10 days.  Here is what I am thinking and keep in mind that I am not a doctor and I do not play one on TV  I am sure there are folks who are a lot farther along than me who might know more :) I am not sure what the insurance will say about weight gain. I think it is a surgeon thing but what do I know I know from my very first meeting/info session with the surgeon they said you can absolutely not gain any weight before surgery. My surgeon also said I needed to lose 15 lbs before surgery. (Which I always found ironic, if it was that easy I wouldn't need surgery ) That being said, I would check with your surgeon and see what he/she has to say. You may get ins. approval but your surgeon may want you to wait a little longer and lose.   Many of the surgeons have folks go on a liquid diet for a period of time before the surgery to take weight off a little faster. Which is what I am doing right now. I will have my surgery on 4/8. I hope that helps a little, I know you have found a great place for support and you are not the only one who has struggled.  Hang in there and best wishes.
