Don't know what to believe.

I am researching the lap band surgery and I had talked to a friend from Michigan that had her surgery awhile ago.  I am not sure what kind of surgery she had but it wasn't the lap band.  She was telling me that the doctor won't do the surgery if I have acid reflux.  Well I have acid refulx but I am taking a medicine to control it.  Has anyone had the lap band surgery and had acid refulx?  Does the lap band surgery make it worse?  Will my current acid medication take care of that?  I do have a list of questions ready for the first meeting. Thanks!

Hi sweetpea!  Don't know what to tell you other than to talk with your surgeon about it.  From what I understood though, WLS is suppose to help acid reflux, so....... Well, when you find out, please let us know what he/she says. Thanks!

I had GERD/acid reflux and Park Nic performed the  RNY surgery for me. If anything, it cured the acid reflux. I still have to take Prilosec for an ulcer but I virtually have no heartburn anymore. Good luck.

Sistaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

From what I have read and learned WLS will help, the lap banders may still experience it because they still have the tummy acids and such attached, RNYers usually find major improvement or completely cured of the symptoms.

The nurse at the information session at PNC will be able to answer =)

I have the band, but I never had acid reflux. I do know of others though who had reflux and the band has helped with that. Have you posted on the main lap band board of OH? You might get some answers there. Jean B.
