Don't know what to believe.

I am researching the lap band surgery and I had talked to a friend from Michigan that had her surgery awhile ago.  I am not sure what kind of surgery she had but it wasn't the lap band.  She was telling me that the doctor won't do the surgery if I have acid reflux.  Well I have acid refulx but I am taking a medicine to control it.  Has anyone had the lap band surgery and had acid refulx?  Does the lap band surgery make it worse?  Will my current acid medication take care of that?  I do have a list of questions ready for the first meeting. Thanks!

One way to get rid of acid reflux is to find a big ball of string (about the size of a house) and stare at it for a full hour, non-stop.  Do you know of any big balls of string where you live (just kidding)? I have researched the LAP-BAND surgery and have never heard of this as a restriction.  I myself am planning to have RNY done; my RN that is helping me coordinate my surgery told me that LAP-BAND surgery at their clinic is generally used for younger patients with a BMI of 45 or under.  That's all I know.   Why not check out http://www.lapband.com for more information?  There's probably a whole host of information on this site.  Good luck!

P.S.   Is the Cokato K.O.A. still around?  I used to go camping there in the late 70's and early 80's with my folks.  Nice mini-golf course!

I just had the RNY (3/20) and before I did so, my Dr said acid reflux was not an issue (I was taking nexium and had it really bad).  He told me that the surgery stops this wonderful little stomach irritant.  He made me stop taking nexium after surgery and I have had no symptoms of acid reflux since.

Sorry, I neglected to catch that you are talking about the lap-band.  From what I have read about it, there are a lot of people who have had acid reflux before and had it disappear after the surgery and there are a few who had never had it until after the lap-band surgery.  I did not, however, see anyone say that they couldn't have the surgery because of their reflux problem.
